About the Role

This is a full-time, hands-on leadership role for someone who knows how to run work in the field, keep crews productive, coordinate daily plans, and ensure projects are completed safely, correctly, and on schedule. The ideal candidate will have experience in heavy civil, bridge, or DOT work and be ready for increased responsibility, autonomy, and a long-term path into higher field leadership.

Travel is primarily regional, with occasional out-of-town projects requiring overnight stays. While no licenses or certifications are required at hire, OSHA, safety, and equipment certifications are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead daily field operations on bridge, heavy highway, culvert, structural concrete, overlay, and DOT-related projects.
  • Supervise and direct laborers, operators, crew members, and subcontractors in the field.
  • Coordinate daily work plans, manpower, materials, tools, equipment, and site logistics.
  • Read and interpret plans, specifications, elevations, and DOT requirements.
  • Keep crews productive, safe, and aligned with project expectations.
  • Run toolbox talks and reinforce safe work practices in active roadway, bridge, traffic-control, and heavy construction environments.
  • Track daily field progress, issues, manpower, equipment, and material needs.
  • Communicate field updates, delays, material needs, and jobsite issues to leadership.
  • Coordinate with inspectors, subcontractors, and project leadership as needed.
  • Identify and resolve field problems before they impact schedule, quality, or cost.
  • Work hands-on when needed while maintaining crew leadership and field oversight.
  • Train and mentor less-experienced crew members.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of heavy highway, bridge, DOT, structural concrete, or closely related civil construction experience.
  • Prior experience leading crews or acting as a Foreman, Leadman, or senior field crew leader.
  • Ability to read and work from plans, specifications, elevations, and field drawings.
  • Strong understanding of safe work practices around traffic, bridges, heavy equipment, concrete work, and active jobsites.
  • Comfortable working in a union/prevailing wage environment.
  • Willingness to join or remain in the appropriate union as required by project and company needs.
  • Ability to work as a hands-on, working Foreman when the job requires it.
  • Willingness to travel regionally and work occasional nights or adjusted schedules due to traffic control, weather, temperature, or project conditions.
  • Strong communication skills with crews, leadership, inspectors, and subcontractors.
  • Reliable, accountable, and able to keep the job moving without constant oversight.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ohio DOT experience or DOT experience from another state.
  • Bridge repair, bridge maintenance, bridge deck, overlay, culvert, or structural concrete experience.
  • Experience working on municipal, county, state, federal, or prevailing wage projects.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors while serving as the field lead.
  • OSHA 10, OSHA 30, fall protection, rigging, or other safety certifications.
  • Experience operating or assisting with equipment such as skid steers, excavators, or similar machinery.
  • Bidwell concrete paver or similar concrete paving equipment experience.
  • Interest in growing into Superintendent or higher field leadership over time.

Skills & Attributes

The best fit for this role is someone who:

  • Knows how bridge, DOT, and heavy highway work gets done in the field.
  • Can lead crews without needing to be micromanaged.
  • Is comfortable getting out of the truck and helping when needed.
  • Takes pride in quality, safety, and production.
  • Can work with experienced union crews and earn respect through competence.
  • Wants more autonomy and a real path to grow.
