About the role

We are seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to safely and efficiently operate assigned equipment used to install fiber-optic cable, copper cable, coaxial cable, single and three-phase power cable, and possibly sewer or water facilities. This position involves operating both smaller and larger scale heavy equipment, assisting with various job aspects, and performing occasional basic labor duties. You will work in rural and urban areas, read prints and schematics, and mentor other team members.

This role is 100% field-based, requiring the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, travel, and be away from home for extended periods. Physical demands include walking, sitting, standing, bending, twisting, stooping, pushing, pulling, carrying, and lifting, as well as coordinating eyes, hands, feet, and limbs for skilled movement.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment, including backhoes, mini excavators, cable plows, and track hoes, for digging operations around utilities in rural and urban areas.
  • Perform daily maintenance on construction equipment.
  • Successfully excavate around existing utilities.
  • Train and assist co-workers learning to be operators.
  • Perform routine labor tasks such as potholing, equipment setup, conduit/duct/cable placement, and setting pedestals.
  • Drive tow vehicles hauling equipment to and around job sites.
  • Assist with all aspects of the job, including basic labor responsibilities.
  • Abide by all company, manufacturer, and industry safety procedures and standards; attend mandatory safety meetings.

Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License; Class A CDL preferred.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screenings.
  • Demonstrated field experience operating backhoes, mini excavators, cable plows, or track hoes around utilities.
  • General knowledge of utility construction procedures, including print reading.
  • Familiarity with procedures, tools, and equipment for safe and effective underground utility installation.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and maintain a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to maintain equipment and hand tools.
  • Strong ability to read, comprehend, and carry out instructions.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
