Heavy Equipment Operator/Truck Driver - Roving

Summary or Purpose
Operates North Slope Borough heavy equipment; maintains roads, airports, and landfills; pumps sewage from septic tanks to pump truck; and assist with operating fuel truck to safely transport and deliver fuel to North Slope Borough facilities and residents. This position will work a two week on - two week off shift and travel where an HEO/Truck Driver is needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment and other machinery in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
- Maintains and clears roads, airport runway and access roads, and landfill areas.
- Inspects vehicles and equipment prior to operations; completes shift inspection checklist.
- Maintain vehicle and equipment log, inspection forms, maintenance record and daily trip reports.
- Inspects and cleans equipment and facility; reports maintenance needs and deficiencies to supervisor; may need to keep accurate records of fuel deliveries.
- Loading and unloads aircraft with heavy equipment. May assist with supervising loading and unloading.
- May need to assist with delivering diesel fuel to North Slope Borough fuel storage facilities and residential homes.
- May assist in maintaining oil spill response kits and assists with deployment, installation, removal, or other use of spill response equipment materials.
- Must be polite and courteous to the public.
- May be required to work a non-traditional work schedule to include evening, holidays and weekends and may be subject to 24 hour on-call status.
- Attend all required scheduled safety meetings.
- Will be required to travel to all North Slope communities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of North Slope Borough organization, operations, policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in heavy equipment operation.
- Valid Alaska Commercial Drivers License that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria.
Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses Required
- High School graduate or G.E.D./, a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience.
- Two years of experience with heavy equipment operations and maintenance.
- Valid Alaska Drivers License and Alaska Commercial Drivers License with X and N Endorsement Code (hauling liquids in bulk (tank) that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria.
- Ability to obtain 40-Hour Hazwoper certification within probationary period.
- Documentation of adequate Diphtheria Immunization prior to employment; Documentation of Tetanus Immunization prior to employment;
Documentation of Hepatitis A vaccination series with the first dose prior to employment, second dose six months after;
Documentation of Hepatitis B vaccination series with the first dose prior to employment, second dose six months after, and final dose six months after the first dose.
