Heavy Equipment Operator II

Expected hiring range: $31.35 - $39.19/hour

About the Role

The Town of Vail is seeking a motivated and experienced Heavy Equipment Operator II to operate a variety of light, medium, and heavy public works vehicles and equipment. Responsibilities include street construction and repair, structure construction, snow removal, road construction, trash removal, drainage maintenance, sign fabrication, and support for special events. During the winter season, the focus shifts to snowplowing and removal, requiring a regular call-in schedule, early mornings, and overnight shifts. The position may also be assigned to any functional area within Public Works as needed.

Responsibilities

• Operate light, medium, and heavy public works vehicles and equipment for street construction, repair, and maintenance.
• Perform snowplowing and snow removal during the winter season, including early mornings and overnight shifts.
• Assist with road construction, trash removal, drainage maintenance, sign fabrication, and special events.
• Work in various functional areas of Public Works as assigned.
• Interact with the public in a guest-service-oriented environment.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Working knowledge of public works operations, including road construction, heavy equipment operations, trash removal, drainage maintenance, and sign fabrication.
• Hands-on experience safely operating loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, and other equipment, from small hand tools to large machinery.
• Flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain one; must secure a Class B CDL within 30 days of hire.
• Good driving record.
• Ability to lift a minimum of 100 lbs.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, with exposure to equipment noise, traffic, chemicals, and fumes.
• Physical demands include stooping, standing, kneeling, and lifting for the entire shift.
