About the role

This position involves operating a tandem axle roll off container truck and may involve operating a front loader refuse truck, requiring a Class A or B CDL license. Duties include performing routine and preventative vehicle and equipment maintenance, loading and unloading roll off containers, and assisting with preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate or be capable of learning to operate a roll-off truck and front end truck.
  • Perform routine and preventative vehicle and equipment maintenance.
  • Load and unload roll off containers and perform routine grounds keeping work at dumpster sites and landfills.
  • Paint and maintain dumpsters.
  • Use various hand and power tools, welding/cutting torches, maintenance supplies and parts, safety gear.
  • Inspect and maintain assigned vehicles, equipment and tools; perform routine maintenance and repairs as necessary.
  • Pick up parts and supplies as requested.
  • Interact and communicate with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, other County personnel, and the general public.
  • May occasionally operate tracked excavator, front-end loader, dump truck, farm tractor, and other various equipment as assigned.
  • Follow assigned routes of pick up and clean around sites as prescribed.
  • Aid in preventive maintenance on vehicles and periodic servicing.
  • Wash vehicles and equipment to ensure proper operation and servicing.
  • Ensure waste material is unloaded at the proper locations.
  • Maintain County collection and disposal sites.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED and some experience operating equipment and dealing with the public; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid North Carolina Class: A or B CDL license.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures and related information.
  • Knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Solid Waste Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Heavy Equipment Operator.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures and related information.
  • Ability to safety and skillfully operate heavy trucks to transport materials to and from various sites.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry; is able to work effectively despite occasional exposure to extreme weather and temperatures, wetness/humidity, machinery hazards, traffic hazards, dust, fumes, above-average noise, odors, smoke, vibrations, etc.
  • Ability to perform routine equipment maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to perform routine grounds keeping work as required.
  • Ability to offer assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required.
  • Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
  • Ability to perform required mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to prepare simple records with accuracy and in a timely manner.
  • Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation.

Qualifications

  • Pass a random DOT drug screening at any time.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
