Heavy Equipment Operator

About the role
A MasTec Civil Equipment Operator is a non-FLSA exempt, skilled craft position that performs a wide variety of tasks on heavy construction projects. Operators transfer between tasks as workflow dictates and must be physically fit to meet Safety Sensitive Position requirements.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate proficiency in handling, pre-start inspections, post-start inspections, maneuvering, shutdown, and securing procedures for heavy equipment.
- Work various shifts in a team environment, ensuring accountability for daily team functions and project execution.
- Perform daily safety and operational inspections of equipment using documented checklists; report deficiencies and perform minor repairs.
- Communicate damages or mechanical breakdowns to supervisors and the Fleet Department.
- Ensure regular maintenance of assigned equipment is scheduled and performed per the operations and maintenance manual.
- Understand equipment operation characteristics, controls, capacity limitations, and emergency response procedures.
- Climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely and assist in other duties when not operating equipment.
- Lift and carry 50-80 pounds frequently, and up to 150 pounds with assistance; load materials into the bucket by hand if needed.
- Place and remove TBW construction concrete barriers efficiently; load and unload barriers from trucks.
- Maintain situation awareness and constant alertness to site activities, including other employees, contractors, and equipment.
- Maintain a level grade while spreading, balancing, or recovering materials; understand graded stakes and surveyor terminology.
- Load up to 20 trucks at a time from stockpiles as assigned.
- Change equipment attachments (e.g., forks, boom, hydraulic hammer) and understand maximum equipment capacities.
- Knowledge of electronic grade lasers is desired.
- Understand cut and fill terminology while excavating according to survey stakes.
- Identify and request utility locations before excavation; lead a ground person for assistance if needed.
- Ensure all personnel remain outside the maximum reach of equipment parts or extensions.
- Stop the machine and apply secure pins before leaving equipment unattended.
- Load trucks as needed and maintain safety awareness, including shutting down equipment and removing keys during maintenance or washing.
Requirements
- 2-5 years of construction-related experience (roads, highways, bridges, etc.) operating excavators or bulldozers.
- Required documentation or certifications as mandated by industry standards or governmental agencies.
- Completion of high school or secondary education is preferred.
