Flippo Construction Company, Inc is seeking an experienced Excavator Operator to join our team in support of underground utility projects in the Washington DC, Northern Virginia, and Baltimore MD areas. Both DC residents and non-DC residents are encouraged to apply.

About the role

The Excavator Operator is responsible for safely operating the equipment to perform activities including excavating, backfilling, trenching, ditching, and clean up. The operator ensures the safety of employees, pedestrians, traffic, and equipment within their work area, and must achieve maximum production while being aware of hazards associated with equipment operation.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the equipment in a proper and safe manner in support of underground utility projects.
  • Visually check for utilities if utility locates are not marked or cannot be defined.
  • Inspect and conduct general maintenance on the equipment.
  • Assist the fuel driver in fueling the equipment.
  • Grease the equipment daily and keep it clean from dirt and excess grease.
  • Change buckets on equipment as needed.
  • Check oil, battery, transmission, hydraulic systems, tires, radiators, tracks, and back-up alarms for proper levels or operation prior to starting work. Complete and submit a weekly equipment inspection report.
  • Report all equipment breakdowns immediately.
  • Take direction from the Foreman or their designated appointee.
  • Remain near or on the machine during the workday unless directed otherwise by a supervisor.
  • Assist the crew in other useful work when the machine is not in use.
  • Attend weekly tool-box talks and all other company safety meetings.
  • Work in all types of weather conditions unless there is an immediate threat of danger.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of prior experience operating an excavator in support of underground utility projects.
  • Current DC Operators License.
  • Knowledgeable about the machine, its correct method of operation, and limitations.
  • Physical ability to perform the following tasks for a minimum of 8 hours per day:
    • Negotiate rough terrain.
    • Climb in and out of manholes, excavations, and other confined or enclosed spaces.
    • Climb up and down from equipment to operate it or perform routine maintenance checks.
    • Carry and use trade-associated tools, equipment, or material up to 95 pounds.
    • Adequate vision to observe and follow hand signals.
    • Stand, stoop, bend, reach, climb, walk, or sit.
    • Perform all associated job functions of a laborer, including shoveling, using sledge or claw hammers, mixing or breaking concrete, operating pipe or chain saws, and carrying equipment or materials.
  • Maintain the following tools for minor repairs and adjustments:
    • Standard Wrench Set from 3/8" to 3/4".
    • Standard Socket Set from 3/8" to 3/4".
    • 1/2" Drive Ratchet.
    • Large and Small Phillips Head Screwdrivers.
    • Large and Small Slotted Head Screwdrivers.
    • 10" or 12" Adjustable Wrench.
    • Hammer.
    • Pliers.
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screen.
