Heavy Equipment Operator

About the role

Operates straight or articulated rubber-tired tractor-type vehicles equipped with front-mounted hydraulically powered buckets or scoops to lift and transport materials to and from storage or processing areas, load trucks or rail cars, and feed hoppers, conveyors, or chutes. Operates straight or articulated rubber-tired dump trucks with dump bodies and skid steer machines with fork, bucket, or blade attachments.

Performs routine maintenance on equipment such as lubricating, fueling, and cleaning. Replaces or assists other workers as needed and performs other tasks as assigned by supervision.

Responsibilities

• Complete safety, health, and task training
• Read and use operator’s manuals; fill out pre-shift inspection forms and simple reports
• Carry out simple oral and written instructions; handle standardized problem-solving
• Understand machine mechanics, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements
• Know quality control considerations and demonstrate safe, productive job performance
• Safely load and dump materials in designated areas accurately and efficiently
• Safely charge dump hoppers at established average tons per hour rate
• Safely lubricate, service, and maintain equipment
• Perform safety inspections of the machine and work area
• Perform medium work: lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds occasionally
• Climb on and around equipment; sit for long periods while operating machinery
• Perform scheduled maintenance on assigned equipment
• Complete other assigned training and meet supervisor’s performance standards
• Replace or assist other workers as needed
• Perform other tasks as assigned by supervision or designated lead person

Requirements

• Regularly sit, walk (including on uneven surfaces), and climb stairs or ladders
• Use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms
• Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell
• Occasionally stand and work at heights
• Lift and/or move up to 40 pounds occasionally
• Close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision; ability to adjust focus
• Work near moving mechanical parts, in high or precarious places, and in outside weather conditions
• Exposure to explosives, wet or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, petroleum products, extreme cold or heat, electrical shock risk, radiation, and vibration
• Moderate noise levels in the work environment
