About the Role
Under direct supervision (Mechanic I) or general supervision (Mechanic II), performs a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of light-duty, medium-duty, heavy trailer, truck, and road maintenance equipment.
Pay
- Heavy Equipment Mechanic I: Budgeted starting salary $24.14/hour (Grade 5: $19.31 - $28.96/hour)
- Heavy Equipment Mechanic II: Budgeted starting salary $29.22/hour (Grade 7: $23.37 - $35.06/hour)
Responsibilities
Heavy Equipment Mechanic I
- Assists in performing diagnostics, minor repairs, and general maintenance on gas hybrid, gasoline, and diesel engines, and major drive train components (transmissions, differentials, and drive units) under direct supervision.
- Assists in diagnostics and minor repairs on emissions systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, electrical circuits, air conditioning systems, air systems, and hydraulic systems.
- Assists in performing safety repairs to comply with DOT regulations, including air and hydraulic brake systems, repairs and adjustments of lights, front and rear end alignment, tire balancing, drive line adjustments, and damaged vehicle body repairs.
- Maintains records of all work performed using a computerized fleet management system.
- Completes necessary paperwork related to job assignments and time cards.
- Assists in general in-shop repairs of minor system failures, including lights, brakes, brake adjustments, air system leaks, two-way radio system installations, cooling system problems, and fuel system problems.
- Assists in emergency road calls, which may require wrecker service or special transportation.
- Assists in rebuilding gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, single and twin screw rear axles, and compressor systems.
- Assists in engineering, layout, fabrication, and installation of new equipment or repairs and redesign of existing equipment.
- Cleans and organizes shop and equipment, changes solvents, and disposes of trash and waste.
- Maintains work area, tools, and equipment in a clean and safe condition; reports unsafe acts or conditions to supervisor.
- Orders and picks up parts.
- Assists in welding repairs.
Heavy Equipment Mechanic II
- Performs and directs diagnostics, major and minor repairs, and general maintenance on gas hybrid, gasoline, and diesel engines and major drive train components (transmissions, differentials, and drive units).
- Performs and directs diagnostics, major and minor repairs on emissions systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, electrical circuits, air conditioning systems, air systems, and hydraulic systems.

Requirements
Heavy Equipment Mechanic I
- Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalency preferred. Current enrollment in a vocational school or training preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience performing mechanical repairs on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment preferred.
- Licenses/Certificates:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Commercial B Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement within 120 days of hire required.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Forklift operator certification within 120 days of hire required.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in Medium/Heavy Truck within two (2) years of hire in one or more of the following required: Gasoline Engines, Diesel Engines, Drive Train, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems, Truck Equipment Installation and Repair, Electrical/Electronic Systems Installation and Repair, and/or Auxiliary/Power Systems Installation and Repair. Similar or related Manufacturer Certification will be considered in lieu of ASE Certification.
Heavy Equipment Mechanic II
- Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalency preferred.
- Experience: Two (2) years or more of experience performing mechanical repairs on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment required.
- Licenses/Certificates:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class B Colorado Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement within 120 days of hire required.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Forklift operator certification within 120 days of hire required.

- Special Requirements:
- Must be able to pass post-job offer physical screening.
