Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Essential Functions

  • Analyzes malfunctions.
  • Repairs, rebuilds, and maintains power equipment, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools.
  • Operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects.
  • Dismantles and reassembles equipment, using hoists and hand tools.
  • Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.
  • Replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions.
  • Tests and overhauls equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
  • Welds broken parts.
  • Cleans parts and assembles and disassembles equipment.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • At least two (2+) years’ experience as a heavy equipment mechanic.
  • At least two (2+) years of experience as a qualified welder.

Requirements

  • A valid state Commercial Driver License (CDL) with acceptable driving record pertinent to the position, or be able to obtain a valid state CDL within 90 days of hiring.
  • Maintain the CDL and an acceptable driving record during the duration of employment.
  • Possess and maintain welding qualification in accordance with American Welding Society (AWS) standards for the equipment and material utilized.

Skills

  • Basic to intermediate level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.

Physical Demands

  • Lift/carry/push/slide up to 50 pounds routinely.
  • Bend, Squat, Stoop, Crouch, Lean, Sit, and Balance.
  • Work with power/automated hand tools.
  • Lift/carry/push/slide up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand for long periods of time.
  • Repeat the same movements.
  • Work in an automotive repair shop around moving objects, vehicles, machinery with moving parts, and confined spaces.

Security Clearance Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain a security clearance at the Public Trust level.
  • Due to the location of this work, U.S. citizenship is required.
