About the role
We are seeking a full-time, exempt Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team in Manassas, VA. This role reports to both the Director of Field Administration and the Service Manager. The Mechanic will diagnose and perform all repairs, oversee service calls, and complete or oversee preventative maintenance on yard equipment.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventative services on trucks and equipment at the shop.
- Perform small and quick diagnostics or report back faulty items in the field.
- Diagnose trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, and small equipment at the shop.
- Perform small repairs in the field such as hydraulic line repairs, alternator replacements, battery replacements, and quick assembly of parts.
- Conduct quality control checks of the crew's daily maintenance to ensure accountability and provide training for team members filling out reports.
- Transport small portable equipment or safety-related items to job sites located along the daily route (e.g., fire extinguisher replacements, small tools).
- Perform PM services on trucks and equipment, including wiring on trailers, brakes, suspension work, and welding as needed on trailers and trucks.
- Handle brake repairs, tire changes on smaller and larger trucks, and replace components as needed.
- Respond to road calls throughout the DMV area.
- Change hydraulic lines on equipment and other machines, and work on small equipment.
- Complete special projects or other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Physical Requirements
- Must be physically fit to perform manual labor in all types of environments and conditions, including heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.).
- Regularly required to sit, stand, use hands and fingers, handle or feel, and verbally communicate and listen.
- Other physical requirements include walking, climbing or balancing, and stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
- Specific vision abilities required: distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Qualifications
- 3 years of heavy equipment mechanical work experience.
- Must have own basic hand tools (wrenches; diagnostic tools not required).
- Wiring knowledge on trailers and Ford trucks (lighting/electrical/airlines).
- Experience with trucks and CAT equipment or equivalent (smaller equipment).
- Service calls experience.
- Preventative Maintenance experience on trucks and smaller equipment (oil change, tire rotation, grease, filter changes; brake work is a plus).
