This position performs a variety of work associated with the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel machinery, equipment, and light duty vehicles in the Wolf Point Shop. Responsibilities include fabrication of specialized parts, system design and manufacture, troubleshooting, cleaning, inspecting, and determining repair courses. The role involves restoring close tolerances, machining or replacing functional parts, reassembling equipment, and testing performance. The incumbent must follow maintenance procedures and is part of a career ladder with advancement opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintain gasoline and diesel machinery, equipment, and light-duty vehicles.
  • Fabricate specialized parts and design systems.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and operational issues.
  • Clean, inspect, and determine repair needs, including restoring close tolerances.
  • Machine or replace functional parts, devices, and control instruments.
  • Reinstall, assemble, and test equipment to verify performance.
  • Follow established maintenance procedures.

Requirements

  • Valid Montana Commercial Operator’s License (Class A, Type II) with no restrictions, a tank endorsement, and a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC), or a permit with the ability to obtain the full license within 30 days of hire.
  • Forklift certification must be obtained within 3 months of hire.
  • Experience requirements vary by level:
    • Level III: Four (4) years of experience in diesel heavy equipment and truck or light-duty vehicles, or a combination of both.
    • Level II: Three (3) years of experience in diesel heavy equipment and truck or light-duty vehicles, or a combination of both.
    • Level I: Two (2) years of experience in diesel heavy equipment and truck or light-duty vehicles, or a combination of both.
  • Related formal education in gas and diesel vehicle, equipment, or machinery repair and maintenance may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Pay

  • Mechanic/Machinist Level III: Starting pay of $32.09 per hour.
  • Mechanic/Machinist Level II: Starting pay of $31.59 per hour.
  • Mechanic/Machinist Level I: Starting pay of $31.09 per hour.

Mechanic/Machinists at MDT may advance in pay to a Level IV with three years of MDT Mechanic/Machinist Level III experience. Placement and salary are determined by education and experience.

This position is covered under a Career Ladder Advancement Policy. Applicants meeting qualifications for Level III will be given preference, followed by Level II, then Level I.
