Heavy Equipment Mechanic

About the Role

This position performs general maintenance and repairs on a variety of heavy equipment at the U.S. Coast Guard Base in Kodiak, Alaska. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic operates under the general direction of a Shop Lead and follows established procedures and methods to ensure timely and efficient completion of work in accordance with contractual timelines.

Responsibilities

• Performs work assignments on all types of heavy equipment.
• Completes tasks timely and efficiently in accordance with contractual timelines.
• Writes accurate and legible Service Reports; reads and comprehends blueprints, technical data, and service manuals.
• Ensures accuracy of work orders by charging parts and labor to proper work order segments.
• Operates construction machinery being repaired and tests for performance.
• Fully tests all equipment after servicing and/or repairs.
• Uses diagnostic tools and computers to troubleshoot needed repairs.
• Researches various manufacturers' electronic manuals and information via the internet; communicates via email.
• Projects a positive company image with fellow employees, customers, and management.
• Keeps work area clean and orderly; follows all work safety rules and procedures.
• Complies with all Contamination Control procedures.
• Accumulates contaminated dirt and filters in drums; completes stock transfer and transports full drums by forklift to Hazardous Waste Storage area.
• Works with hazardous waste and attends recurring Hazardous Waste Training.
• Stays up to date with developments in tooling, technologies, and systems.
• Maintains any relevant trade certificates.
• Willing to work overtime when needed.
• Owns and maintains sufficient hand tools to perform the job as assigned.
• Performs other relevant job duties as directed by management.

Requirements

• High school education or G.E.D. equivalent preferred.
• Must be able to communicate clearly (oral and written) in the English language.
• Valid Alaska driver's license required.
• Five (5) years' experience on diesel heavy equipment sufficient to provide competency in this skill area.
• Valid CDL or ability to gain CDL within 6 months.
• Ability to pass a drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check results to obtain access to military base.
• Reliable transportation to/from work is a necessity and must be used to obtain access to military installations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Manufacturer accredited training (Caterpillar, Case, Pierce, John Deere, or other).
• Own tools.
• Ability to operate equipment for snow removal as needed.
• ASE Certified and/or EVT certified.

Work Environment

The work is primarily active and performed in a maintenance shop setting. Walking and climbing will be required at work sites. The environment involves risks or discomforts typical of vehicle and maintenance shop settings, requiring specific safety precautions.

Physical Demands

• Essential functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, sitting, walking, or standing for prolonged periods.
• Work involves lifting, handling, or moving up to 75 lbs.
• Repairs may require working on top of or beneath vehicles or equipment on jacks/stands.
• Office settings for data entry and reporting are also part of the role.
• Proper wearing of Personal Protective Equipment and hearing protection is required.

Condition of Employment

Pursuant to the Company's collective bargaining agreement with the Teamsters Local 959 Union, it is a condition of employment for this bargaining unit position to become and remain a member in good standing with the Union or pay an agency fee to the Union.
