Heavy Equipment Mechanic

About the Role

This position is responsible for performing various job tasks at a shop facility located in Muskegon, MI, with travel to work on hazardous and non-hazardous waste sites as needed. Work on hazardous waste sites may include possible exposure to lead, PCBs, H₂S, arsenic, and various other metals, chemicals, and conditions. Job tasks involve manual labor in various weather conditions. Candidates must be willing to learn, adapt to new job tasks, and work with a team. Subject to a background check and physical/drug screen. Must be able to wear PPE when needed.

This position will be assigned to a local shop in Muskegon, MI, with travel to various sites across the U.S. on an as-needed basis. To be considered for future projects, candidates must be open to sustained project-based travel within the U.S. Project locations will vary depending on the assignment.

Responsibilities

• Perform the job in compliance with ENTACT safety and environmental policies and procedures.
• Conduct in-depth inspection of heavy machinery to identify faults.
• Perform routine maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment, trailers, and hydraulic systems.
• Effectively troubleshoot and identify malfunctions and failures in construction equipment and vehicles in a field environment.
• Assist site management and equipment operators with addressing outstanding mechanical and maintenance issues.
• Accurately record time, parts, and inspection checklists. Maintain accurate records of repairs performed.
• Move company equipment safely on site or in a laydown yard as needed.
• Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair heavy construction equipment and vehicles in accordance with OEM requirements.
• Diagnose and repair engines, transmissions, clutches, electrical and pneumatic systems, gearboxes, hydraulics, cooling systems, exhaust, brakes, suspensions, lights, etc., on a variety of construction equipment, heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and other equipment.
• Disassemble, inspect, and replace worn or broken parts. Fit and adjust new or repaired parts.
• Weld and hard-face wear items on heavy equipment buckets and attachments.
• Safely operate gauges, forklifts, torches, grinders, welders, and various hand and power tools.
• Keep tools and equipment in good maintenance.
• Adhere to safety protocols while working on equipment in the shop or field.
• Assist with the preparation and review of Job Safety Analyses, observations, and other reports.
• Promote the use of Stop Work Authority.
• Work independently as well as part of a team.
• Meet deadlines and contribute to a positive, safe, high-quality culture in a fast-paced environment.
• Must be capable of successful participation in the ENTACT-USDOT Qualified Driver program for operators of Commercial Motor Vehicles.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• 3+ years of heavy equipment mechanic experience in a similar industry.
• High School Diploma or equivalent. Related technical training/certification is a plus.
• HAZWOPER 40-hour training and current refresher required.
• Valid state-issued driver’s license required; commercial driver’s license a plus.
• General construction equipment and light/heavy diesel engine maintenance experience required.
• Welding and fabrication experience preferred.
• Must be willing to work in various weather conditions and perform manual labor.
• Must be able to wear PPE, including respiratory equipment, when needed.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

Physical Activities: Performing physical activities that may require moving one’s whole body, such as climbing, lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, handling, balancing, walking, stooping, squatting, where the activities often require considerable use of the hands, arms, and legs. Controlling operations of equipment or systems. Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents. Listening to and understanding information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. Using both hands, arms, feet, and legs while standing, walking, climbing, sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fingering, and feeling.

Physical Demands: Most work is performed while standing or walking. Must be capable of working under physical stress conditions such as heat stress and cold stress during various weather conditions and potentially long workdays. Possibility of frequent and prolonged use of respiratory equipment. Heat extremes when wearing certain types of PPE. Wear Level C and D PPE, including cotton, Tyvek, chemical protective coveralls, eye and face protection, hand protection, etc. Potential for Level A and B PPE exists. Climbing to and working on elevations such as scaffolding, lifts, machinery, etc., for extended periods. Expected to lift objects weighing 1 to 25 lbs. on a regular basis and may be required to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Manual labor, including materials handling, digging, and lifting as well as physically moving pumps, hoses, and other equipment or materials. Working in loud or noisy environments.

Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions: Outside construction site. Terrain is rugged and may be difficult to navigate. Dusty and windy atmospheres. Confined spaces. Hot environments. Potential airborne exposures to dust, mists, fumes, and vapors in concentrations not exceeding OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs) or other published occupational exposure limits.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Different types of PPE may be worn, including but not limited to hard hat, hearing protection (ear plugs or muffs), eye protection (safety glasses, goggles, face shield), welders helmet, safety vest, various types of gloves (leather, Nitrile, latex), steel toe boots, and various respiratory protection (dust masks, half-face and full-face respirators, SCBAs, APRs). Protective coveralls include cotton, Tyvek, fire retardant, chemical protective, etc.

Qualifications

Knowledge: Must possess and demonstrate abilities to diagnose equipment failures and perform necessary repairs utilizing appropriate diagnostic tools. Must possess and demonstrate skills to safely operate various types of equipment, tools, mechanical devices, and be knowledgeable of their uses and limitations.

Schedule

Monday through Saturday with occasional Sunday work.

Pay

$25.00 - $35.00 per hour plus overtime per state law, travel pay, and per diem per company policy.
