Heavy Equipment Mechanic

About the role

This position supports critical operations in defense, aeronautics, and space by maintaining commercial and military vehicles and equipment. The role is assigned to range maintenance and primarily involves working outdoors.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain commercial and military-designed vehicles and equipment.
• Use computer-based technical directives, service manuals, and electronic engine control diagnostic equipment to diagnose malfunctions.
• Inspect vehicles, machines, or equipment to diagnose defects, analyze malfunctions, and determine required repairs.
• Rebuild and maintain power equipment, including light passenger vehicles, heavy trucks, military vehicles, cranes, scrapers, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools.
• Dismantle and examine parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers and gauges; reassemble equipment using necessary tools.
• Replace defective vehicle components, engines, and subassemblies such as automotive air conditioning systems, transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, pillar blocks, hydraulic cylinders, and motors.
• Test overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
• Weld or fabricate broken parts and structural members as required.
• Perform tire repairs of all types.
• Conduct vehicle recovery operations, wrecker operation, parts research, and work order processing.
• Maintain the Vehicle Maintenance facility and surrounding areas to high standards.
• Strictly observe and comply with all established safety standards.
• Perform maintenance under field conditions and vehicle recovery operations.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least six years of heavy equipment maintenance or related expertise.
• Employment in heavy equipment maintenance for 12 out of the past 24 months (graduation from an accredited training facility may waive part of this requirement).
• Well-rounded combination of formal training and hands-on experience, typically acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent program.
• Ability to research and understand technical data, wiring, vacuum, air, and hydraulic diagrams.
• Ability to diagnose issues by interpreting customer conversations for hidden details.
• Valid Class "C" Nevada state driver’s license.
• Eligibility for a Secret security clearance.

Physical Requirements

• Repetitively hold/balance, reach, flex, twist, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, squat/crouch, crawl, climb (on/in/out of equipment/vehicles), and sit for short or long periods.
• Lift objects weighing up to 60 pounds.

Skills

• ASE certification in automotive air conditioning systems (preferred).
• Knowledge of Electronic Engine Controls (highly desired).
• Class A or B Nevada CDL (preferred).
• Passenger and/or HAZMAT endorsements (desirable).
• Working knowledge of MS Office software.
