Heavy Equip Mechanic
Location: St. Paul, MN
Full-time, unlimited position within the Transportation Department's Maintenance / Equipment Fleet Management division.
About the role
This position repairs heavy equipment and trucks, including performing skilled diagnostics via advanced technology computer software to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical/electronic problems. Work involves repair and maintenance of engines, drive trains, hydraulic, and emission systems for a variety of equipment operating in corrosive environments. Equipment includes heavy and light-duty vehicles (E85 and Bio-diesel), specialized equipment for snow and ice control, construction, road, and site maintenance. Work may be performed in remote field locations, truck stations, shops, and other sites as necessary for non-district equipment.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair engines, drive trains, brakes, steering/suspension, and hydraulics for heavy-duty diesel trucks, equipment, and gasoline-powered vehicles.
- Use electronics and computerized testing equipment/onboard computers to diagnose problems and adjust component functions.
- Maintain and modify heavy equipment and trucks in various environments, including corrosive conditions.
- Perform repairs and maintenance in remote field locations, truck stations, shops, and other sites as required.
Requirements
- Completion of a Heavy Equipment Apprenticeship program or graduation from a two-year Heavy Equipment Mechanic or related training program, including:
- Diagnosis and repair of engines, drive trains, brakes, steering/suspension, and hydraulics for heavy equipment (e.g., trucks, tractors, buses).
- Training in electronics sufficient to make engine adjustments and diagnose problems.
- Training in the use of computerized testing equipment and/or onboard computers for diagnostics and adjustments.
- OR 3 years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic, including:
- Diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and modification of heavy-duty diesel trucks, equipment, and gasoline-powered vehicles.
- Diagnosis and repair of engines, brakes, drive trains, steering/suspension, and hydraulics.
- Use of electronics and computerized testing equipment/onboard computers for diagnostics and adjustments.
- Class A or B driver’s license with no brake restrictions, tanker endorsement, and a valid Commercial Vehicle Inspector certification (must be obtained by the end of the probationary period, within 6 months of hire).
- Valid Minnesota driver’s license.

Pay
$34.16 - $39.66 per hour ($71,326 - $82,810 annually).
