Heating and Air Conditioning Mechanic

Under the supervision of the Facilities Director, performs a variety of work installing, maintaining, and repairing mechanical equipment in the maintenance of College properties.

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm

Overtime required at the discretion of the College. Overtime is an essential function of non-exempt/hourly employees and may be voluntary (usually during summer months) or mandatory based on seniority rotation. On-call assignments (including mandatory on-call) are also based on seniority rotation.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs equipment such as steam valves, steam traps, steam or water coils, steam or water radiators, unit heaters, water heaters, boilers, condensate and circulating pumps, and piping & plumbing associated with water and heating/steam lines.
  • Provides preventive maintenance to all fan coil units, boiler units, air compressors, and packaged roof-top units. Changes air filters, belts, and grease.
  • Performs cleaning of all residential boilers.
  • Troubleshoots and replaces fuses, coils, and contacts on mechanical equipment.
  • Conducts daily inspections of all mechanical rooms and reports any issues to supervisor.
  • Performs daily inspections of swimming pool and rowing tank.
  • Installs, repairs, and services electric motors.
  • Removes, installs, and repairs appliances.
  • Replaces fuses and electrical switches.
  • Performs basic plumbing repairs such as unclogging toilets, sinks, or urinals; troubleshooting and repairing water leaks, leaking faucets, and water fountains.
  • Performs basic electrical repairs such as changing light bulbs or fluorescent lamps and assists in repairing ballast and light fixtures.
  • Maintains tools and equipment necessary for work.
  • Purchases supplies and materials necessary to complete projects with supervisor approval.
  • Assists other Facilities staff with completing larger projects.
  • Handles repairs and replacement work not directly related to mechanic work, such as:
    • Cleaning flat roof drains, gutters, and leaders.
    • Shade replacement and sign installation.
    • Repairing loose floor and ceramic tiles, stair treads.
    • Replacing ceiling tiles and caulking windows and doors.
    • Assembling and moving furniture.
    • Assisting with hanging pictures, bulletin boards, and shelving.
    • Assisting with campus table and chair set-ups.
  • Performs other maintenance work and assists others as directed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Three to five years of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration experience, along with a variety of maintenance skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to perform physical activities, such as lifting equipment, moving furniture, and working in tight spaces.
  • Ability to safely use tools, equipment, and work from ladders and scaffolding.
  • Ability to complete required trainings, including but not limited to:
    • Lock out tag out.
    • Confined space.
    • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets).
    • Asbestos and lead identification.
    • Ladder safety.
    • Emergency evacuation.
    • In-house OSHA and respirator training.
    • Other training as required or mandated by the College.
  • Ability to interact appropriately with all College community members, guests, and contractors.

Pay

$29.13/hour
