Healthcare Tech (CNA) - Proctor Acute Care

About the role

A Health Care Tech (HCT) provides basic care to patients and assists them with daily activities they may have difficulty performing independently, such as bathing. Due to the personal nature of the role, an HCT must possess strong interpersonal skills, compassion, and a genuine desire to help others. In nursing or long-term care facilities, an HCT often serves as a patient's primary caregiver.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED (Required)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days (American Heart Association)

Responsibilities

• Performs patient care activities as delegated by the nurse, following applicable policies and procedures to meet patient needs and expectations.
• Provides hygiene needs, including AM/PM care, oral hygiene, denture care, perineal care, shampooing, bathing, shaving, and care of TED/SCD hose.
• Meets nutritional needs by distributing and setting up trays, offering supplements, assisting with feeding, managing tube feedings, and recording intake.
• Addresses elimination needs, including Foley care, bowel movements, bladder training, enemas, external catheters, and recording output.
• Provides skin care, including turning and positioning patients, preventing skin breakdown, operating special beds, nail care, and back rubs.
• Ensures patient comfort through proper positioning, oral care, wrinkle-free bedding, and keeping essential items (bedside table, water pitcher, urinal) within reach.
• Supports patient activity needs, such as dangling, turning, assisting with chairs, ambulation, walkers, and crutches.
• Performs patient measurements, including intake/output (I&O), hemoccult/gastrocult tests, temperature/pulse/respiration (TPR), blood pressure (B/P), weights, emptying drains, abdominal girth, and hose measurements.
• Assists with additional skills as directed and supervised by the nurse after training and certification, such as intermittent urinary catheterization and clean dressing changes (varies by unit).
• Assists with patient admission, transfer, and discharge, including vital signs, height/weight, room setup, orientation, and ensuring call light availability.
• Sets up and manages care equipment (IV poles, admission kits) and stores/transfers patient belongings (dentures, hearing aids, glasses, and other personal items).
• Achieves patient satisfaction by conducting rounds every two hours to ensure comfort, proper positioning, call light availability, and a tidy room.
• Responds promptly to call lights, respects patient privacy, and reports pertinent information to the assigned nurse in a timely manner.
• Completes documentation before the end of the shift and uses time, supplies, and resources efficiently to promote cost-effective care.
• Performs unit maintenance duties, such as cleaning patient rooms, bathrooms, wastebaskets, bedpans, and specipans, and removing discontinued equipment.
• Maintains a neat and safe patient environment, including stocking supplies, charging out used supplies, and ensuring hallways and doorways remain clear.
• Assists with lifting patients safely and promptly, using proper body mechanics and requesting assistance as needed.
• Organizes and prioritizes work, using downtime to improve unit appearance and accepting additional assignments as needed.
• Contributes to patient and staff safety by using protective equipment, washing hands between patients, and reporting unsafe conditions or equipment.
• Participates in teamwork and effective communication to promote a positive department environment and customer satisfaction.
• Attends educational offerings to maintain current knowledge of patient care and provides constructive peer evaluations.
• Supports unit goals, including patient falls prevention, infection control, and improving patient care processes.
• Interacts constructively with other personnel and provides pertinent patient information to nurses during shifts.

Pay

The compensation range for this position is $17.89 per hour to $28.98 per hour. The actual compensation offered will depend on factors such as experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked, and compensation model.
