Healthcare Tech (CNA) - Methodist Neuro 8C

To assist Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses in the provision of patient care by performing assigned patient care and unit maintenance activities.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• At least one of the following:
  • One semester of nursing clinical experience
  • Worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) within the past 24 months
  • Relevant medical military training
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification
  • Successful completion of Carle's HCT In Training Program
  • Completion of CNA coursework within the past 24 months
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days (American Heart Association)

Responsibilities

• Performs patient care activities as delegated by the nurse, ensuring patient needs and expectations are met.
• Provides hygiene needs of assigned patients (AM/PM care, oral hygiene, denture care, perineal care, shampoo, bathing, shaving, care of TED/SCD hose).
• Provides nutritional needs of assigned patients (tray distribution, setting up trays, offering supplements, feeding, adding tube feeding, and recording intake).
• Provides elimination needs of assigned patients (Foley care, bowel movements, bladder training, enemas, external catheters; records output).
• Provides skin care of assigned patients (turning, positioning, recognition and prevention of skin breakdown, operation of special beds, nail care, back rubs).
• Provides comfort measures (proper positioning, back rubs, oral care, wrinkle-free bed sheets, ensuring bedside table, water pitcher, urinal are within reach).
• Provides activity needs of assigned patients (dangling, turning, chair, ambulating, walker, crutches).
• Performs measurements of assigned patients (I&O, hemoccult, gastrocult, TPR, B/P, weights, empty drains, abdominal girth, hose measurements).
• Performs additional skills as directed and supervised by the nurse after training and certification (e.g., intermittent urinary catheterization, clean dressing changes).
• Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients, including:
  • Completing assigned aspects of admission (vital signs, height and weight, room setup, room orientation, assisting patient to bed, ensuring call light availability).
  • Setting up equipment for care (IV poles, admission kit, others).
  • Storing and transferring belongings (dentures, hearing aids, glasses, and other personal items).
  • Packing up all patient belongings at discharge.
• Achieves patient satisfaction by:
  • Making rounds minimally every two hours to ensure patient comfort, proper positioning, call light availability, and room orderliness.
  • Anticipating patient needs and answering call lights promptly.
  • Respecting patient privacy and reporting pertinent information to the assigned nurse in a timely manner.
  • Completing documentation prior to leaving shift.
• Uses time, supplies, and resources productively to promote responsive and cost-effective care:
  • Completes care while conserving resources and within the assigned shift.
  • Prevents waste of supplies and linen.
  • Checks patient rooms for unused equipment/supplies and returns them to SPD promptly.
  • Assists with patient lifting in a timely manner.
  • Organizes and prioritizes work with changes as directed by the nurse.
  • Uses slow time to improve unit appearance and accepts additional assignments.
  • Assists others in assignment completion.
• Performs unit maintenance duties/errands to ensure a clean, neatly organized, efficiently operating unit:
  • Maintains a neat and safe patient environment (bedside table, bathrooms, wastebaskets, bedpans, specipans).
  • Ensures discontinued equipment is removed from patient rooms.
  • Completes assigned maintenance tasks (cleaning of kitchen, refrigerators, utility rooms, IV poles, carts, making charts, distributing SPD items).
  • Ensures adequate stock of BSI supplies in all rooms and is knowledgeable of SPD exchange cart system.
  • Performs errands as requested and responds promptly to urgent requests.
• Assumes personal responsibility for patient, environmental, and personal safety:
  • Provides safety measures for assigned patients (lifting, transfers, side rails, bed checks, call lights, gait belt use, back safety, slide board, use of restraints).
  • Maintains clear hallways and doorways.
  • Uses protective equipment appropriately and washes hands between patients and procedures.
  • Practices good body mechanics and reports unsafe equipment or risky situations promptly.
  • Is alert and responsive to all alarms/call lights.
• Demonstrates a practical problem-solving approach to patient moving and handling issues and promotes patient and staff safety through appropriate use of lift equipment.
• Contributes to a department environment that promotes customer and employee satisfaction through teamwork and effective communication.
• Assists in achieving department goals and objectives by:
  • Utilizing teamwork to maintain positive patient perceptions (promptness, friendliness, attitude, problem-solving, attention to special needs, temperature of foods, noise level, room temperature, attitude towards visitors, concern for privacy).
  • Attending educational offerings to validate skills and maintain current knowledge of patient care.
  • Giving and receiving peer evaluations constructively.
  • Supporting changes and assisting with staffing needs across shifts.
  • Assisting in improvement of patient care (ID bands, patient falls, infection control).
• Demonstrates values with patients and families:
  • Displays warmth, concern, and respect for patients and their families.
  • Respects patient and family privacy and responds promptly to requests.
  • Alerts the nurse promptly when intervention is required.
  • Explains procedures within the nursing assistant scope (meal times, AM care delivery).
• Demonstrates values with unit staff and other hospital personnel:
  • Conveys warmth, concern, and respect for all hospital personnel.
  • Responds to requests and concerns from other personnel.
  • Communicates openly, honestly, and respectfully.
  • Interacts constructively and supportively with others.
  • Recognizes the role others play in providing patient care.
  • Provides pertinent information on assigned patients to the nurse during the shift and as requested.
  • Assists peers in assignment completion.

Pay

The compensation range for this position is $17.89 per hour - $28.98 per hour. The actual compensation offered will depend on factors including experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked, and compensation model.
