Health Unit Coordinator Pediatrics
About the Role
Banner Desert Medical Center is seeking a Health Unit Coordinator to provide administrative support and customer service for an assigned patient care area. This entry-level position promotes organized, efficient delivery of care to patients and facilitates communication between physicians, nurses, and patients. The role acts as a liaison with internal departments and external contacts.
We have two full-time day shift openings and one full-time night shift position. These positions work 11-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays on a rotating basis. You will have the opportunity to utilize our self-scheduling tool and receive a flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential, as well as an 18% night shift differential.
Responsibilities
- Performs receptionist/clerical duties to support overall operating efficiency and effective flow of communication and information throughout the department.
- Participates in the resolution of customer problems or collects necessary data and follows through to appropriate person for problem resolution.
- Processes patient admissions, records bed assignments in the system, makes face sheets, and prints patient labels upon admission.
- Orders outside records from other facilities and physician’s offices.
- Maintains a complete patient record with admission, transfer, and discharge information, progress notes, and consent forms.
- Ensures that all reports and chart forms are scanned or filed into the patient’s record and that charting forms are labeled and accessible.
- Maintains adequate supplies of frequently used patient education materials; may be responsible for QC/validations.
- Enters pending discharges into the system and coordinates patient appointments for procedures and treatments required prior to timely discharge.
- Processes patient discharges.
- Maintains adequate levels of office, dietary, and medical supplies and completes requisition forms when supplies need to be ordered; reconciles supply orders upon delivery.
- Monitors and tracks the use and whereabouts of electronic equipment such as patient ID scanners and laptop computers; ensures all are accounted for and in working order.
This position works under local supervision in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment with a strong focus on customer service. Interacts with patients, families, physicians, unit staff, case managers, patient service staff, medical records staff, and a wide variety of external customers.
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
- Skills and abilities typically attained with 1 year of medical clerical experience, preferably in a hospital or physician office setting, or prior experience in customer service.
- Excellent organizational skills, as well as effective human relations and communication skills.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy, including commonly used office software and keyboarding skills.
Employees working in a Behavioral Health clinical setting that serves children must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain it for the duration of their employment. An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Successful completion of an approved unit secretary program.
- BLS certification.
