Health Sciences/Outreach Librarian

Faculty position reporting to the Library Director. Works with another librarian to provide instruction, reference, collection development, orientations, research, and evidence-synthesis support to students, faculty, and staff in the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) and the College of Health Sciences’ School of Nursing, Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program, and Radiologic Technology Program. Also serves as Outreach Librarian, coordinating library programs, events, and support for special initiatives including the HCOP Academy, Student Services, wellness programs, and community events.

Responsibilities

• Serves as one of two librarians supporting the TUC College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM), providing library assistance, instruction, and support to COM students.
• Primary librarian for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography and Radiologic Technology Programs, delivering orientations, class instruction, reference, collection development, online-aid creation/maintenance, and research/evidence-synthesis support.
• Primary librarian for COM Clinical Sciences, Community Health, Clinical Education, Academic Affairs, and Graduate Medical Education Departments, supporting faculty research, reference, and evidence-synthesis needs.
• Back-up librarian for the COM MSMHS Program and for research/reference support of COM faculty in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) and Foundational Biomedical Sciences Departments.
• With the other COM librarian, provides library orientation, reference, and collection development support to COM doctoral students.
• With the primary School of Nursing (SON) librarian, delivers library assistance, instruction, and support—including orientations, class instruction, reference, collection development, online-aid maintenance, and research/evidence-synthesis support—to SON students, faculty, and staff.
• Represents COM, SON, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, and Radiologic Technology Programs in library decisions on database and journal selection, purchase, and renewal.
• Leads coordination and arrangement of library programs and events, and provides library support for TUC programs including the annual HCOP Academy, orientations, Student Services, and others.
• Prepares posters and book displays for monthly cultural and health events, updates the library reading list, and leads related programs.
• Provides research and reference support to adjunct faculty outside Touro University California.
• Back-up to the Access Services Librarian for course reserves and the course textbook list.
• Participates in discussions, decision-making, and efforts related to library promotion and service improvement.
• Contributes to general reference and instruction services; may require some evening hours.
• Maintains professional currency and contributes to librarianship through conferences, workshops, readings, scholarship, or research.
• As a TUC faculty member and library representative, participates in campus and faculty meetings and functions.

Requirements

• Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library or information science program.
• Previous experience working as a librarian.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong service orientation, flexibility, reliability, productivity, and sound judgment.
• Ability to work independently, one-on-one, and in a team environment.
• Knowledge and currency in librarianship developments.
• Experience with and sound knowledge of web technologies and library databases.

Qualifications

• Degree in a health sciences field highly desirable.
• Previous experience in an academic or medical library highly preferred.
• Work experience with medical and allied health databases, resources, research, reference, and/or teaching highly desirable.
• Experience working with university/library departments and community organizations.

Skills

• Maintains command of print and electronic library resources for COM, diagnostic medical sonography, radiologic technologies, and School of Nursing, as well as other resources relevant to the TUC curriculum.
• Provides clear, well-organized, subject-oriented library instruction tailored to specific classes, programs, or students.
• Creates and maintains well-organized, clear, up-to-date, and audience-appropriate teaching aids.
• Stays current with new library resources in assigned subject areas; exercises good judgment in selection and de-selection.

Pay

Minimum: USD $63,200.00/year
Maximum: USD $79,000.00/year
