About the role
The Health and Safety Manager provides leadership, guidance, and expertise to business units in the development and implementation of health and safety strategies, standards, policies, and processes. You will ensure compliance with legislative requirements and facilitate the effective use of the Health & Safety Management System (HSMS). In this role, you will equip line management and field personnel with the necessary tools, information, and awareness to address health and safety concerns proactively. Through expert guidance and support, you will work to mitigate risks, prevent occupational injuries and illnesses, and foster a strong culture of workplace safety.
Responsibilities
- Safety Leadership
- Ensure implementation and continuous improvement of safety, health, and loss control processes and systems within assigned regional areas.
- Participate in the effective development, delivery, and implementation of health & safety policies, programs, and communications that support the Health, Safety, and Environment Improvement Plan (HSE-IP) across business units.
- Safety Programs
- Develop, implement, and direct the facility's Occupational Health and Safety Program to support the company's goals of providing a safe and healthy workplace.
- Assist unit management in developing and implementing H&S Improvement Plan objectives, identifying improvement areas, and creating associated action plans.
- Determine requirements and priorities for safe work processes in maintenance and operational functions, focusing on high-risk tasks.
- Support site management to facilitate early and safe return to work for employees who are injured or become ill at work.
- Safety Performance
- Provide analysis and interpretation of health and safety metrics and key performance indicators.
- Deliver H&S statistical information and key indicators in a meaningful format for business units and management teams to support effective decision-making.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation and fulfillment of contractual environmental, health, and safety requirements.
- Training and Coaching
- Provide ongoing coaching to management teams on their responsibilities regarding legislative and corporate health & safety requirements and assist in developing compliance solutions.
- Develop and deliver health & safety training modules and programs reflective of applicable legislative requirements and corporate policies.
- Facilitate training programs including orientation, mobile equipment, crane, material handling, workplace-specific hazardous material information systems, and others as required.
- Investigations
- Facilitate and participate in incident/accident investigations and risk assessments.
- Develop corrective actions and follow up to ensure compliance and root-cause analyses are completed according to incident type and risk.
- Assertively manage post-incident matters, including incident reporting, post-incident action items, Worker's Compensation claims, and Early and Safe Return to Work initiatives.
- Audits
- Assist units in preparation for periodic health & safety audits, monitor the status of actions to address audit recommendations, and help remove barriers to completion.
- Participate in and lead periodic group health & safety audits to assess diverse business units' implementation of LH HSMS.
- Identify best practices that could support health and safety evolution.
- Safety Systems
- Actively develop or identify systems, programs, and training needs, ensuring these solutions are implemented and aligned with HSMS requirements.
- Participate in and assist with the development and sourcing of new health & safety products, ensuring product effectiveness, consistency, and financial prudence.
Requirements
- Level 2 or Level 3 First Aid Certificate.
- 5-10 years of progressive health and safety experience, including managing staff.
- Associate degree or a Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is required.
- Must be comfortable traveling.
- Proficient knowledge of health and safety regulations and laws.
- Professional Designation such as Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is considered an asset.
- Valid driver's license is considered an asset.
