Health Room Assistant

About the Role

This position provides daily health-related care to students under the direction of a licensed health care professional. The role focuses on preventing, identifying, and remediating health problems that may impair learning, social adjustment, or emotional well-being.

Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate written and computerized health records of all students and provide care in the health room.
• Maintain and track student immunization records to support reporting requirements for the Washington Department of Health.
• Document all health care provided to students in a timely manner.
• Distribute and implement health protocols as directed by the Health Clinician – RN.
• Monitor health plans to meet the medical, health, and safety needs of students, including medication authorization forms and self-carry medication forms required by District Policy.
• Administer prescribed medicines and treatments to students according to Washington State Law and District Board Policy, and document as directed by the Health Clinician – RN.
• Provide immediate first aid care in case of injury or sudden illness.
• Provide care for students with special physical needs after receiving training and under the direction of the Health Clinician – RN, including but not limited to catheterization, gastrostomy tube feeding, monitoring diabetes, and supporting school and family in the remediation of head lice.
• Follow District Policy regarding prevention and control of communicable diseases, first aid in acute illness or injury, disaster preparedness, and safety and sanitation in the assigned building.
• Notify Health Clinician – RN in case of an outbreak of disease, and check immune-suppressed students’ schedules for possible exposure.
• Check for medical conditions and medication prior to field trips; provide teachers with necessary information and verify trained staff is assigned or attend field trips as necessary.
• Manage health room medical supplies.
• Practice Universal Precautions to prevent contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM).
• Attend in-services, workshops, and meetings as directed.
• Perform vision and hearing screening as required and in accordance with Washington State Codes.
• Cultivate and model appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines.
• May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams.
• Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

Requirements

• Current CPR/First Aid and AED certification.
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Health care experience and/or CNA/MA strongly recommended.
• Experience working with children preferred.
• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
• Knowledge/awareness of own cultural identity and how this influences behavior, and desire to learn about the cultural identity of others.
• Ability to establish and nurture an environment that promotes cultural competence and equitable treatment of staff, students, and patrons of the district.
• Excellent human relations, communication, and organizational skills; ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
• Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
• Computerized record-keeping skills.
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize student needs.
• Ability to maintain state/federal special education compliance requirements, including timelines involving special needs or medically fragile students.
• Ability to understand and maintain comprehensive student health care plans.
• Knowledge of community resources and family service agencies.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to communicate effectively using both English and Spanish preferred.

Licenses/Special Requirements

• Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury, or neglect of a minor.
• Must complete Walla Walla Public Schools Risk Management and Bloodborne Pathogens Training upon hire.

Mental Demands

• Required to deal with a wide range of student, staff, and public behaviors and needs in a positive and service-oriented manner.
• May occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students or parents.

Physical Demands

• May be required to physically transfer students.

Reporting Relationships

Reports jointly to the assigned Health Clinician – RN, Building Principal, and the Director of Health Services.

Schedule

Six and a half (6.5) hours per day, five (5) days per week, 194 days per school year.
