About the role
This role supports efforts in the greater Richmond, VA area. The Health Physicist oversees and implements radiation protection programs to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, accreditation standards, and best practices in radiation safety.
Responsibilities
- Carry out audits and inspections of radiation safety programs to ensure compliance with NRC, state, and institutional regulations.
- Develop, implement, and review Radiation Protection Programs and related procedures for medical, academic, and industrial clients.
- Maintain records, prepare documentation, and generate reports required by regulatory authorities and accrediting bodies.
- Support clients with radioactive waste handling, storage, and disposal, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
- Deliver training and educational sessions on radiation safety, ALARA principles, emergency response, and regulatory compliance to radiation workers and ancillary staff.
- Operate a computer and other electronic equipment daily.
- Occasionally perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 lbs, moving equipment, and driving between client facilities.
Requirements
- Board certification by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP), or eligibility demonstrated through completion of a recognized training program in health physics or a related field.
- Substantial experience in radiation protection, compliance auditing, and regulatory interface in medical, industrial, or academic settings.
- In-depth knowledge of NRC and state regulations, NUREG guidance, and applicable ANSI, NCRP, and ICRP standards.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to convey technical concepts to a variety of audiences.
- Demonstrated initiative, professionalism, and organizational ability in managing projects and meeting deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt solutions to client-specific challenges.
