About the Role

Reviews, analyzes, abstracts, and releases information in medical records using pre-established criteria and complex regulatory standards. Works with technical systems requiring a high level of computer literacy.

Responsibilities

• Organize, analyze, and evaluate health information according to established policy, procedures, and regulatory standards.
• Collect, abstract, and retrieve health information from both the medical record and secondary sources.
• Process requests for health information.
• Compile and utilize statistics.
• Perform clerical tasks.
• Interact with Medical and Clinical Services staff in a positive and professional manner.
• Adhere to established hospital policy and procedure related to job function.
• Maintain confidentiality related to patients, staff, and visitors.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent; medical secretarial or health information education a plus.
• One to two years of experience in a Medical Record Department.
• Knowledge of office equipment (e.g., FAX, copy machine, microfilm reader/printers, multi-line phones).
• Formal or working knowledge of PC applications, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, as well as good interpersonal skills.
• Customer service-oriented.
• Participates in orientation, continuing education, and updates/maintains knowledge and skills related to specific areas of expertise.

Accredited Record Technician preferred.

Work Environment

• Office setting – Exposure Class I.
• Limited exposure to situations that could cause serious illness or injury.
• Light work: sitting, standing, walking, lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying.
• Exposure to CRT and repetitive motions.

Work contact group includes all services, employees, medical staff, patients, visitors, and various regulatory and professional agency staff.
