Health Information Specialist I
About the role
We are seeking a Health Information Specialist to support front desk operations and Release of Information (ROI) services at a healthcare location in Newark, NJ. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the timely, accurate, and compliant handling of medical record requests. It is ideal for someone who enjoys working directly with patients, is detail-oriented, and is interested in long-term growth within a healthcare organization.
Location: Onsite | Newark, NJ | Full-Time | Monday–Friday 8am–4:30pm EST
Responsibilities
- Serve as the front desk point of contact for patient walk-ins requesting medical records or releases
- Provide phone support to patients, providers, and authorized requestors
- Process Release of Information (ROI) requests accurately and timely
- Fax, scan, and manage incoming and outgoing medical record requests
- Burn medical images to CDs and share images electronically as required
- Support client relationship management through professional communication
- Assist with reporting and administrative duties such as data entry and email
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, privacy regulations, and facility policies
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (must be from an Accredited Institute recognized by the State Dept. of Education)
- Able to work overtime during peak seasons when required
- Basic computer proficiency
- Comfortable utilizing phones, fax machines, printers, and other general office equipment on a regular basis
- Professional verbal and written communication skills in the English language
- Detail and quality oriented as it relates to accurate and compliant information for medical records
- Strong data entry skills
- Must be able to work with minimum supervision responding to changing priorities and role needs
- Ability to organize and manage multiple tasks
- Able to respond to requests in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to stay organized while working quickly; strong attention to detail is also required
- Passing annual Introductory HIPAA examination (testing to be given annually in accordance with employee review)
- Required to take and pass a 90-day ROI Certification course with a score of 85% or higher
To ensure the safety of patients and staff, many of our clients require post-offer health screenings and proof and/or completion of various vaccinations such as the flu shot, Tdap, COVID-19, etc. Any requests to be exempted from these requirements will be reviewed by Datavant Human Resources and determined on a case-by-case basis. Pay
The estimated base pay range per hour for this role is: $15.92–$19.44 USD.
