Health Information Operations Specialist

About the role

The Health Information Operations Specialist plays a crucial role in the interdisciplinary health team, focusing on medical records maintenance and service scheduling.

Responsibilities

  • Protects patient confidentiality by adhering to COFMC Patient Confidentiality and HIPAA policies/procedures
  • Maintains high levels of confidentiality by not discussing patient information outside of relevant cases
  • Ensures proper maintenance of all medical records
  • Verifies proper authorization before releasing medical records
  • Distributes incoming faxes based on urgency
  • Refers initial and follow-up appointments for all providers/patients
  • Sends appointment information and requirements to patients
  • Tracks and follows up on incoming referrals
  • Maintains a collaborative relationship with clinical staff for optimal patient flow
  • Participates in Performance Improvement Teams
  • Communicates clearly and effectively with coworkers
  • Rotates to other sites as needed
  • Trains other staff and new employees
  • Attends agency-sponsored trainings and events
  • Completes orientation/training activities for new departmental personnel
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in medical records, referrals, or clerical duties
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
  • Strong clerical and organizational skills
  • Attention to details
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in computer software such as Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel
  • Ability to work and communicate with a multidisciplinary healthcare team and the public
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods
  • Self-motivated and organized with a flexible approach
  • Prioritizes tasks and works in high-volume environments
