About the role

Do you love working with children and have a passion for creating a healthy, safe, and thriving school environment? Are you calm under pressure, highly organized, and eager to contribute to the daily life of a small, close-knit community? Do you believe schools have a responsibility to actively work toward equity and anti-racist practice, and to honor and affirm children’s identities, cultures, and voices? If so, you may be the Health Director we’re looking for at Princeton Friends School—a place where care, connection, and the well-being of every child truly matter.

At Princeton Friends School, all faculty and staff work collaboratively to actively bring to life the school’s mission. Drawing on a rich tradition of Quaker values and practices, Princeton Friends School is committed to creating a diverse, vibrant learning community in which young people engage their natural curiosity, discover and express their individual voices and gifts, acquire intellectual, physical, artistic, and life skills, and develop a sense of responsibility for themselves and others.

The Health Director at Princeton Friends School is an approachable, engaged community member who combines expertise in student health with flexibility and creativity to support a wide range of school operations. This role is ideal for someone who is highly detail-oriented and enjoys wearing many hats—providing health care, managing records, greeting families at the front desk, and pitching in wherever needed to keep the school running smoothly.

Responsibilities

  • Provide compassionate, responsive healthcare to students throughout the school day.
  • Support health and wellness education for students and staff, both informally and through planned programming.
  • Monitor student medical records, immunization tracking, and compliance with state regulations, HIPAA, and NJAIS policies.
  • Submit data/reports to appropriate organizations/authorities.
  • Lead infectious control efforts and stay current on best practices for community health.
  • Administer medications and develop individualized healthcare plans in close communication with families.
  • Organize first aid/medical aid kits for day and overnight field trips; educate school staff on relevant students’ medical needs/medication needs.
  • Serve as a key member of the school’s safety and emergency response team.
  • Maintain properly stocked medical supplies and bloodborne pathogen kits throughout campus; ensure staff know the location of each kit.
  • Support daily school operations, including:
    • Covering the front desk and welcoming visitors.
    • Assisting with attendance and other routine administrative tasks.
    • Acting as an “administrator at large,” ready to step in where needed to keep the school day running smoothly.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to maintain a safe, inclusive, and joyful environment for students, faculty, and families.

Requirements

  • Experience working with children (ages 3–8th grade) and values their capabilities.
  • A Registered Nurse degree or equivalent health-related certification (experience in a school setting preferred but not required).
  • A high level of organization, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • A clear, customer service-oriented approach to communication with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Flexibility, creativity, and a sense of joy in your work.
  • Eagerness to build relationships across differences and support an inclusive, anti-bias learning environment.
  • Enthusiasm to be part of a small team where collaboration and adaptability are essential.
  • A strong commitment to anti-racism in and out of school.
  • Experience in a Quaker school or a commitment to learning and adopting Quaker values and practices in a school setting.
  • Required education: 4-year degree.

Physical Requirements

  • Sit, stand, bend, walk, talk, hear, and operate office and medical equipment.
  • Move actively around classrooms and outdoor campus.
  • Lift up to 10 pounds.

Pay

Salary range: $40,000–$70,000, commensurate with experience.

Schedule

Full-time, 10-month position (40 hours/week). The Health Director role offers a flexible schedule shaped by both the needs of the school and the strengths of the right candidate.

Benefits

  • Health Insurance
  • Life & Long-Term Disability Insurance
  • Retirement: partial employer match
  • Childcare Benefits:
    • Tuition Remission: 90% remission for employees’ children enrolled at Princeton Friends School
    • Free After School Program care during working hours
