Health Center Mechanic, BPFLC

About the Role

Under the supervision of the Operations Supervisor, responsible for full interior and exterior maintenance of a 27,000 sq. foot building and surrounding property. This includes mechanical and electrical testing, repairs, and routine preventive maintenance of equipment and facility systems such as plumbing, lighting, HVAC, etc. Maintains logs and inventory of repair parts. Performs carpentry, painting, plastering, light housekeeping, landscaping, and other tasks for routine upkeep. Ensures sufficient levels and operational availability of supplies and equipment to support patient care. Oversees safety and security systems to ensure proper functionality. Responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of lab specimens, medications, immunizations, and interoffice correspondence for Brookside, Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center, and South Huntington facilities.

Responsibilities

• Maintains grounds and building exterior to meet appearance and safety standards, ensuring clean, safe access and walkways for staff and patients.
• Removes hazards due to snow, ice, or disrepair through shoveling, ice removal, and oversight of necessary repairs to driveways and building exteriors.
• Ensures proper collection and disposal of contaminated trash according to hospital policy, including safe disposal of contaminated materials and sharps.
• Performs routine facility mechanic support and general mechanical maintenance, including:
  • Carpentry work (repairs, installing shelves, mounting bulletin boards, furniture repair, bumper rail installation).
  • Plumbing work (repairing leaks, unplugging drains, replacing washers, interpreting blueprints).
  • Painting (application of paint, plaster, stain, or varnish to interior/exterior surfaces).
  • Electrical/mechanical maintenance (changing light bulbs, repairing wiring, fixing door mechanisms, etc.).
• Establishes and manages preventive maintenance programs for all systems, collaborating with CBRE for larger projects/repairs and electrical installations.
• Orders routine and special-order supplies using online systems to maintain sufficient inventory levels.
• Performs preventive maintenance on clinical and information systems equipment, including disassembly, repair, and reassembly.
• Maintains logs of routine reviews, upkeep, and repairs.
• Oversees safety systems (emergency lighting, exit signs, fire extinguishers, fire alarm/suppression systems) through monthly checks and reporting.
• Completes routine and special reports, escalating problems to supervisors as needed.
• Transports lab specimens, medications, immunizations, and interoffice correspondence between Brookside, Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center, South Huntington, and other facilities (e.g., BWH, Boston Medical Center, State Laboratory).
• Delivers pharmaceuticals and medications while maintaining proper temperature control.
• Distributes incoming/outgoing mail between facilities.
• Picks up MBTA passes on the last Thursday of each month.
• Delivers special contracts and grants to outside organizations to protect funding.
• Conducts weekly preventive maintenance checks and periodic cleaning of the facility vehicle.

Requirements

• High School Graduate with 4-5 years of comparable experience.
• Ability to read, write, perform simple arithmetic calculations, and interpret blueprints.
• Strong computer skills and experience with online ordering systems.
• Demonstrated ability to operate power and hand tools safely.
• Current Class 3 driver’s license from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with a safe driving record.
• Knowledge of building and safety codes.
• Advance technical training preferred.
