About the role
The Physical Education Teacher position is responsible for developing students' understanding of physical fitness, hygiene, and social/emotional adjustment. They also aim to discover and develop students' athletic talents and provide instruction in various physical activities and sports.
Responsibilities
- Teach physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports.
- Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter.
- Work cooperatively with other physical education teachers to plan a balanced physical education program.
- Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
- Provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to each student's needs.
- Teach physical education classes for handicapped students, interscholastic athletics, or drill team to senior high students.
- Maintain safety by providing appropriate safety instruction and conducting safety checks on equipment and field areas.
- Maintain control of storage and use of school-owned property.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment.
- Evaluate each student's growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in team sports.
- Select and requisition uniforms, equipment, and instructional aids; maintain required inventory records.
- Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
Qualifications
- Possession of an appropriate degree with advanced course work in physical education.
- Pennsylvania Instructional Teaching Certificate.
- Ability to speak clearly and distinctly, write routine reports and correspondence, and speak effectively with others.
- Ability to apply basic arithmetic calculations, compute rates, ratios, and percentages, and apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to coordinate activities with related and specialist staff, establish and maintain effective working relationships, and develop and maintain required records and reports.
- Ability to operate a personal computer and software.
- Ability to travel to more than one work location in the course of the day if assigned to an itinerant position.
- Physical demands include walking, standing, sitting, reaching, using hands, and operating a personal computer.
