Who We Are
The Health Actuarial Analyst Senior supports actuarial, statistical, and financial analysis for TRS health benefit programs. This is a hybrid position at TRS Headquarters Building 2 in Austin, TX. All applicants must reside in Texas upon employment and continue to reside there during employment.
What You Will Do
- Data and Actuarial Analysis
- Performs complex actuarial and quantitative analyses related to healthcare costs, enrollment trends, utilization patterns, contribution strategies, and benefit program performance.
- Supports financial impact assessments and analyzes proposed plan design, policy, funding, or operational changes by producing models, summarizing results, and identifying key cost drivers.
- Conducts experience studies, trend analyses, forecasting, scenario testing, and financial evaluations to support actuarial projects and business decisions.
- Develops, analyzes, and tests assumptions used in actuarial studies and forecasting models and provides supporting analysis for actuarial review.
- Identifies trends, risks, anomalies, and opportunities through quantitative analysis and research.
- Data Management and Validation
- Reconciles, validates, edits, and prepares complex datasets for actuarial analysis, financial projections, and analytical studies.
- Reviews source data for completeness, accuracy, and consistency and resolves discrepancies with internal stakeholders and external partners.
- Supports actuarial processes through data preparation, testing, reconciliation, and quality assurance activities.
- Maintains documentation of data sources, validation procedures, assumptions, and methodologies to support transparency and auditability.
Required Education
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in actuarial science, mathematics, economics, statistics, or related field.
- Five (5) years of actuarial, accounting, finance, research, financial data analysis, or closely related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using statistical and analytical tools such as SQL, SAS, R, Python, Power BI, Tableau, or similar technologies.
- Knowledge of actuarial principles, statistical methods, forecasting techniques, and financial analysis.
- Knowledge of healthcare financing, benefit plan design, utilization analysis, and cost trend evaluation.
- Skills in analyzing large and complex datasets and translating findings into actionable business insights.
- Completing detailed work with a high degree of accuracy.
- Managing projects, including planning, organizing, and prioritizing work assignments to manage a high-volume workload in a fast-paced and changing environment.
- Written and verbal communications, including telephone communications and drafting and delivering complex correspondence, reports, presentations, and proposals.
- Utilizing a personal computer and various business software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; including using spreadsheets for data analysis and presentation.
- Ability to independently lead complex analytical projects and manage multiple priorities.
- Identifying emerging risks, trends, and opportunities and communicating their potential impacts effectively.
