Purpose
To instruct students in the fundamental skills, strategy, and training necessary for them to realize individual and team success. Students shall receive instruction that fosters moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence. While community and parent pressure for winning can be taxing, it must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health.
Responsible to
USD 405 Administration
Supervises
Advises, coordinates, and supports a staff of assistant coaches and students in conjunction with the Athletic/Activities Director and Principal.
Qualifications
- Teaching certificate preferred
- Knowledge of the fundamentals of the sport/activity
- Knowledge of KSHSAA rules and regulations
- Knowledge of USD 405 policies and expectations
- Ability to organize and supervise a total sports or activity program
Responsibilities
- Maintain a working relationship with other coaches, teachers, and classified staff
- Be a role model for students and athletes at all times
- Maintain a professional relationship with the administration and parents
- Supervise students during scheduled practices and performances
- Stay informed on new techniques or concepts as they pertain to the assigned area of responsibility
- Inventory and maintain equipment and uniforms
- Anticipate immediate and long-range needs for the program and submit purchase requests accordingly
- Coach and model good sportsmanship and citizenship as defined by KSHSAA
- Provide a safe, educational, competitive environment for practices and performances
- Communicate effectively with the school office, media, and parents
- Mentor assistants and evaluate them when necessary
- Accept the leadership responsibilities demanded of the position of head coach
- Maintain the physical well-being of students in all areas pertaining to the designated responsibility
- Request transportation, lodging, and meal stipend as needed
- Perform any other responsibility within the domain of the assigned area, excluding facility maintenance, fundraising, event administration, or vehicle procurement and maintenance
Physical Requirements / Environmental Conditions
- Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials (up to 60 pounds)
- Requires stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching
- Requires climbing and balancing
- Must work indoors and outdoors year-round
- Must occasionally work in noisy and crowded environments with numerous interruptions
