Head Start Teacher Aide

About the Role

USD Head Start is seeking a caring, energetic Teacher Aide to join our Head Start classroom in the Tea School District. In this role, you’ll support a positive, engaging learning environment for children ages 3–5 and work closely with the Head Start Teacher to help each child reach important developmental milestones.

What You'll Do

  • Supervise children in the classroom and on the playground
  • Support daily learning activities and routines
  • Assist the Head Start Teacher in implementing developmentally appropriate practices
  • Help create a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment for all children

Schedule

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Monday–Friday, 7:45 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. with 1/2 hour unpaid lunch break
  • 9.5-month position (August 16 – May 31 annually)
  • Benefits-eligible role with the State of South Dakota

Qualifications

  • Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential preferred, willing to get one within two years
  • Experience working with young children required
  • A passion for supporting early learning and child development
  • Must obtain CDA if needed
  • Must pass fingerprint background check

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

  • Bending, stooping, twisting, crouching, kneeling, squatting, stretching
  • Lifting light, reaching, pushing/pulling
  • Use of both hands independently, walking
  • Vision (with and without corrective lenses), depth perception, distant vision, near vision, peripheral vision
  • Hearing and speaking abilities
  • Exposure to infectious diseases (vaccination recommended due to potential occupational exposure)
  • Biohazard exposure (supporting children with toileting or minor injuries)
  • Changes of temperature, exposure to noise, extreme weather conditions
  • Work environments: classroom, office, and outdoors
  • Protective clothing/equipment: latex gloves, aprons, hairnets, and gloves for meal preparation

Education Head Start provides free health, education and development services to families with young children. A federally funded program, we work with families to recognize their unique characteristics, cultural values and strengths, and offer services like:

  • Vision, hearing and developmental screenings
  • Nutritious meals and snacks
  • Health services
  • Parent education
  • Community resource information
