About the role

Global Legal plays a key role in protecting HSBC’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. This role provides expert legal and strategic advice to senior management, businesses and functions on US bank and bank holding company regulatory issues and related North America and cross-Atlantic prudential policy matters. You’ll help ensure legal and reputational risks are identified, reported and mitigated across critical US regulated entities within a systemically important global bank. Success means delivering clear, practical advice that supports sustainable business growth while keeping activity within the letter and spirit of the law. You’ll set direction for regulatory policy advocacy with US and global regulators in partnership with Legal, Public Affairs and business and functional teams. You’ll also build a strong team environment that supports development, inclusion and consistent execution across the US Legal function.

Responsibilities

  • Leverage deep banking experience working at a US regulated bank and bank holding company to provide expert legal and strategic advice, guidance, and support ensuring legal and reputational risks faced by businesses in the US are identified, reported and mitigated
  • Serve as a leader and trusted advisor to businesses and functions in the U.S. and globally on bank and bank holding company regulatory issues, as well as North America and cross-Atlantic prudential policy matters
  • Lead the company’s regulatory policy advocacy initiatives with U.S. and other global regulators (including banking, financial, securities, and derivatives regulators), collaborating with Legal, Public Affairs, and business and functional partners in the U.S. and globally
  • Partner cross-functionally to assess risk and solve complex regulatory issues
  • Lead and manage an inclusive team of lawyers to support the company
  • Coordinate, communicate and execute the strategic and operational objectives of the US Legal function
  • Partner with senior executives and business stakeholders to drive growth while managing legal and regulatory risk
  • Actively manage external spend related to regulatory advice required by the business
  • Act as a member of the US Legal Leadership Team, contributing on both regional and global issues and leadership actions
  • Evaluate and respond to changes in legal and regulatory requirements as they arise, including acting as the interlock with U.S. and other global regulators, where applicable
  • Advise on a plan that supports sustainable business growth in the US, North America and globally, and protects the bank, enabling the business to operate safely and within the letter and spirit of the law
  • Engage with the wider business and global function agendas, proactively providing sustainable solutions to regulatory issues and challenging the business to ensure appropriate controls are in place
  • Deliver strong leadership and partnership including guidance, challenge, support and development for staff; ensure team and associated knowledge is recognised and valued by stakeholders
  • Lead through change as a role model for new ways and standards of working — open, dependable and connected
  • Identify, develop, retain and motivate teams; lead and develop an effective team through communication, performance management, development plans and reward/recognition practices
  • Promote an environment that supports inclusion and reflects the HSBC brand
  • See beyond day-to-day work; take a broad strategic view of the business, create strategies with insight and knowledge of the market, customers, competitors and digital technology
  • Demonstrate new ways of working to improve performance; take both a global and regional perspective on business issues
  • Collaborate proactively with employees at all levels and incorporate feedback; create buy-in to strategy enabling others to understand purpose and direction
  • Attract strong, talented teams and build networks
  • Work collaboratively across functional/business/geographic boundaries, sharing ideas and resources to mutual advantage
  • As a trusted advisor to the Business, continually adapt to deliver priorities; balance consensus, consultation and rigor with the need to drive progress
  • Drive quickly to decisions based on available data and input
  • Successfully complete Anti-Money Laundering and Sanctions training and post-course assessment as required

Requirements

  • JD is a mandatory requirement
  • Experience working at a US regulated bank or Bank Holding Company, with experience handling bank and bank holding company regulatory issues strongly preferred

  • Ability to think broadly, with valid opinions and awareness of trends and changes within the US and North America — particularly legislative and regulatory trends
  • Experience working at a U.S. banking regulator or a U.S. government agency (e.g., U.S. Treasury) preferred
  • Ability to influence thinking and behaviours regionally and globally; provide concise legal solutions to senior business sponsors; collaborate with internal and external stakeholders proactively to recommend or determine a course of action
  • Exhibit robust judgement and decision making, and resilience to challenge
  • Background working in legally sensitive, evolving environments, balancing commercial, reputational and regulatory objectives
  • Track record of creating, leading and motivating teams; assembling the right expertise and effectively managing human capital to ensure correct coverage
