Connecticut Innovations (“CI”) is Connecticut’s strategic venture capital arm, serving a portfolio of 220+ companies across life sciences, technology, and climate tech. This role is with CREW Carbon, a portfolio company whose technology and services make wastewater treatment cheaper and more efficient while permanently sequestering CO₂. Leveraging advanced chemistry, natural minerals, and AI, CREW has developed a category-defining process-intensification platform that helps wastewater treatment facilities stabilize pH and alkalinity 24/7, eliminate hazardous chemicals, cut costs, avoid $100M+ infrastructure upgrades, and capture and store CO₂. CREW is currently deploying across the US and Europe, has signed $30M+ in carbon-removal offtake agreements with leading corporations, and is funded by Counteract, ReGen, Ponderosa, and Connecticut Innovations. Offices and labs are located in New Haven, CT and Brooklyn, NY.
About The Role
The Head of Technical Solutions sits at the intersection of technical expertise and strategic relationship-building. This role brings deep wastewater treatment knowledge to CREW to scale its technology and engage with utilities, municipalities, and industry partners—shaping how the technology is understood, evaluated, and adopted in the market. The position supports Engineering, Operations, and R&D teams to advance product development, ensure system performance meets utility expectations, and optimize hardware design, procurement, and integration. The role collaborates closely with CREW’s world-class Advisory team and CEO to define scientific priorities, mentor team members, and drive the company’s mission through innovative research and rigorous analysis. This is a full-time, onsite role based in CREW’s Brooklyn, NY office; remote consideration is available only for exceptional candidates, with regular travel to Brooklyn expected.
Responsibilities
- Serve as CREW’s primary technical subject matter expert in utility-facing engagements.
- Lead technical scoping conversations with utility engineering and operations teams, translating CREW’s biological treatment technology into the context of their specific process needs, infrastructure constraints, and discharge requirements.
- Lead technical support for RFP/RFQ responses, contributing process-level framing and technical positioning, while developing repeatable tools and resources that enable the broader team to support future opportunities.
- Conduct and oversee preliminary site assessments and technical fit evaluations for prospective deployment sites, personally leading strategic or complex opportunities while helping establish scalable qualification processes.
- Help shape the growth of CREW’s technical solutions capability by mentoring future team members, refining customer engagement processes, and contributing to hiring, onboarding, and organizational development as the team expands.
- Identify, develop, and manage strategic partnerships with utilities, municipal water authorities, engineering firms, and co-deployment partners.
- Work in close coordination with the Commercial Team to own senior-level relationships at target accounts—utility directors, chief engineers, operations leads—particularly trust-based, multi-year partnerships that require sustained senior engagement.
- Contribute to CREW’s external technical positioning via white papers, abstracts, peer-reviewed papers, and presentations—helping shape how the company communicates its technology to the engineering and operations community.
- Contribute process and mechanical engineering judgment across both design review and active deployments—acting as a technical resource for Operations and Wastewater Engineering when design or field questions arise.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (required) in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field; a Master’s or PhD degree is a bonus.
- 10+ years of experience in wastewater process engineering, biological treatment design, or related fields.
- Strong understanding of wastewater treatment processes, including nutrient removal, solids handling, and pH and alkalinity control.
- Experience developing and reviewing PFDs, P&IDs, site layouts, mass balance calculations, and process unit design.
- Exceptional technical writing skills, with the ability to translate complex process science into clear, defensible documents for utility executives, consulting engineers, and other stakeholders.
- Familiarity with process modeling tools (BioWin, SUMO, GPS-X, ASM libraries, or equivalent).
- Familiarity with analytical methods used in wastewater and aqueous chemistry system characterization (e.g., IC, TIC, ICP) and ability to interpret analytical data.
- Experience with statistical programming and modeling (e.g., Python, R, MatLab).
- Comfortable working in a rapidly evolving work setting and able to quickly synthesize new information to proactively adjust focus and maintain high-impact results.
- Ability to travel 20-50% to project sites.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.

Pay
The expected base salary range for this role is $150,000 – $200,000. Compensation at the time of offer is unique to each candidate and based on skill set, experience, qualifications, and work location. Salary is one part of the total compensation and benefits package, which may include equity through option grants for eligible employees.
