Head of Primary Casualty Underwriting

Responsibilities

  • Define and execute the underwriting strategy for Primary Casualty business.
  • Oversee the multinational reverse flow casualty business, ensuring local compliance, and coordinated global servicing.
  • Lead the launch and operational development of a retail direct underwriting channel, including digital distribution, pricing and positioning for SME and Mid-market segments.
  • Drive profitable growth while maintaining a balanced risk appetite and portfolio.
  • Monitor market trends and competitor activities to inform pricing, terms, and product development.
  • Collaborate with global underwriting and operations teams to service reverse flow programs.
  • Partner with Distribution, Actuarial, Claims, and Reinsurance to enhance underwriting performance.
  • Establish and enforce underwriting guidelines, authority limits, pricing models, and risk appetite frameworks.
  • Lead complex underwriting decisions, especially for large or unique risks.
  • Analyze loss ratios, pricing adequacy, and portfolio mix to ensure portfolio discipline.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements, internal controls, and audit standards.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of underwriters and underwriting managers across the region.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, technical excellence, and collaboration.
  • Develop talent pipeline through training, coaching, and succession planning.
  • Identify gaps and opportunities in current offerings and lead new product development.
  • Collaborate with actuarial and legal teams to structure innovative solutions tailored to client needs.
  • Leverage analytics and emerging technologies to refine underwriting practices and pricing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business, or related field.
  • Minimum 10–15 years of experience in casualty underwriting, including 5+ years in a senior leadership role.
  • Strong exposure to Workers’ Compensation and multinational program structures.
  • Strong knowledge of primary casualty lines, risk selection, claims trends, and regulatory environments.

  • Strong analytical skills, actuarial understanding, and portfolio management.
  • Effective communicator with excellent negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to drive innovation, change, and digital transformation in underwriting.
  • Familiarity with underwriting platforms, analytics tools, and pricing models.

  • Competitive Compensation Package including a base salary range of $300,000.00 - 350,000.00, commensurate with experience.
