Head of Enterprise Architecture
About the role
Abbott is a global healthcare leader with a portfolio spanning diagnostics, medical devices, nutritionals, and branded generic medicines. The Head of Enterprise Architecture (internally Sr Manager, Enterprise Architecture) will guide the software ecosystem that powers Abbott Cancer Diagnostics, setting architectural vision, standards, and governance to keep platforms scalable, secure, and ready for future growth. Reporting to the IT Software Engineering function, this leader chairs the Architecture Review Board, partners in the IT Program Intake process, and works closely with business and IT leadership to define future‑state platforms, roadmaps, and embed architectural thinking across product teams.
Responsibilities
- Establish the mission and vision of the Enterprise Architecture organization to foster a business‑oriented culture driven by continual innovation.
- Develop and control annual operating and capital expenditure budgets for Enterprise Architecture, ensuring alignment with IT and enterprise strategic objectives.
- Build, guide, and motivate the Enterprise Architecture team through coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
- Partner with business and IT leaders to make investment decisions that balance operational demands, disruptions, opportunities, and long‑term strategic vision.
- Define the future‑state technology platform needed to support new business models and services; establish strategic technology roadmaps.
- Refine and extend communication plans for architecture at the enterprise level.
- Instill architectural thinking into product teams, providing mentorship, challenging the status quo, and promoting modern technologies and patterns.
- Advise senior leaders on options, risks, cost‑benefit analyses, system impacts, and technology priorities.
- Grow the architecture community by bringing together solution, application, and technology architects for knowledge sharing, standardization, decision‑making, and continuous improvement.
- Maintain strong business acumen and translate technology decisions into potential business impacts.
- Supervise staff, organize and prioritize work, conduct performance reviews, train/develop team members, and manage work performance.
- Communicate goals clearly to employees to ensure understanding and success.
- Motivate and inspire employees through coaching and engagement initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Engineering, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, or a related field; or a High School Diploma/GED with 4 years of relevant experience in lieu of a bachelor’s.
- 10+ years of information technology experience with increasing responsibility for delivering transformative technology solutions and business capabilities.
- 5+ years of experience in an architecture role or equivalent engineering leadership position.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new concepts.
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree.
- Experience delivering innovative technology solutions or business capabilities in the life sciences or pharmaceutical industries.
- Experience in supply chain or logistics.
- Experience in physician or patient customer‑experience initiatives.
Pay
The base pay for this position is $129,300.00 – $258,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
