Head of Engineering, Data Platform
About the role
The Head of Engineering, Data Platform is responsible for owning and executing the data platform strategy. This role requires a deep understanding of Snowflake and DBT, hands-on experience with complex data environments, and the ability to navigate regulatory domains.
Responsibilities
- Own the data platform end-to-end, including architecture, tooling decisions, and roadmap.
- Contribute directly to builds, migrations, and optimizations using Snowflake and DBT.
- Integrate and rationalize a complex ecosystem of source systems and vendors into a cohesive, reliable data warehouse.
- Define and evolve the approach to data modeling, including mart/gold layer design.
- Make strategic build vs. buy decisions on tooling and vendor relationships, framing decisions in terms of business and operational outcomes.
- Design and evolve an AI-native data platform, supporting pipelines for LLM applications, agentic workflows, and AI tooling.
- Stay ahead of AI trends and translate them into platform and staffing decisions.
- Frame every platform decision in terms of business outcomes, focusing on operational efficiency, financial impact, and clinical results.
- Partner with business stakeholders to translate data needs into platform capabilities, minimizing friction and access barriers.
- Lead and develop a small high-impact team, setting a high bar for craft, communication, and ownership.
- Invest in the growth of team members, giving clear feedback, creating opportunities for ownership, and developing people who can grow with the platform.
Requirements
Deep, hands-on experience in Snowflake and DBT. Proven experience navigating complex data environments and deeply heterogeneous source systems. Cross-domain background is a plus, especially in regulated domains like healthcare or financial services. Strong point of view on data access philosophy, with a belief in broad availability of raw data to business users. Experience shipping AI-backed data systems and pipelines serving LLM applications, agentic workflows, or AI tooling that fundamentally changes what a data platform needs to do. Action-oriented on governance, documenting what matters, automating what can be, and avoiding process bottlenecks. Experience building and developing teams, thinking about composition intentionally, hiring for gaps, and investing in people's growth. Exceptional communicator, clear, direct, and concise with both technical and non-technical audiences.
Qualifications
Engineering background with a proven track record of hands-on experience in Snowflake and DBT. Proven experience navigating genuinely complex data environments and deeply heterogeneous source systems, messy integrations, inconsistent data models, and real business logic embedded in pipelines. Cross-domain background is a plus; experience in regulated domains (healthcare, financial services, etc.) is helpful but not required. Strong, well-reasoned point of view on data access philosophy; believes raw data should be broadly available to business users and can defend why. Experience building and developing teams; thinks about composition intentionally, hires for gaps, and invests in people's growth. Exceptional communicator; clear, direct, and concise with both technical and non-technical audiences.
