Head of Department (HOD1) Nursery/Finishing - Farm 85213

About the role

The Nursery-Finishing HOD position at Smithfield involves directing the daily operations of the farm wean-to-finish department. Key responsibilities include scheduling and assigning tasks, staff development and training, maintaining animal and human health and welfare, and managing day-to-day activities and processes.

Responsibilities

• Schedule and assign tasks to meet production goals.
• Develop and train staff.
• Maintain animal and human health and welfare.
• Manage and monitor feed inventory.
• Perform necropsy and manage day-to-day inventory procedures.
• Treat sick animals using various pharmaceuticals.
• Follow company policies and procedures.
• Ensure compliance with environmental laws and animal welfare policies.
• Report environmental issues and participate in emergency situations.

Requirements

• 2 years’ direct experience in handling livestock and managing animal welfare.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certification in department, required.
• Ability to do hard physical labor.
• Strong commitment to teamwork.
• Willingness to shower daily in and out of facility.
• Ability to follow instructions and deal with standardized situations.
• Ability to work an average 48-hour week, which can vary frequently.
• Weekend, evening, and holiday work required as needed.
• On-call availability for emergency situations.
• Ability to tolerate and perform tasks such as euthanasia, castration, vaccinations, piglet processing, ear tagging, and taking blood samples.
• Ability to work well with others in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
• Ability to be respectful, approachable, and team-oriented.

Benefits
