Head of Compliance

About the Role

Capital markets are undergoing a fundamental shift as assets move onto blockchains, creating more open and programmable financial systems. However, this transition introduces complexity, making it challenging for most people to engage with these new systems. Fun builds the infrastructure that powers consumer-facing fintech applications, enabling seamless interaction with blockchain-based systems. We’re seeking a Head of Compliance to build and own the compliance function, ensuring our infrastructure meets global standards without hesitation from partners, banks, or regulators. This is a first-hire, build role where compliance is a design input, not an afterthought.

Responsibilities

• Sanctions Program: Own end-to-end sanctions screening, escalation, decisioning, recordkeeping, and reporting, with clear rationale for design choices.
• Policies and Procedures: Develop written policies, procedures, and risk assessments tailored to our unique DeFi-rails architecture.
• Vendor and Tooling Management: Select, implement, and manage blockchain analytics and screening providers, ensuring measurable performance.
• Compliance by Design: Collaborate with Engineering, Product, and Customer Success to embed compliance controls directly into the product.
• Outside Advisors: Direct compliance support and specialist advisors, determining in-house vs. outsourced solutions.

Requirements

• Eight or more years in compliance, with experience at a leading crypto/DeFi company, digital asset exchange, or financial institution with a digital assets practice.
• Working command of OFAC sanctions requirements as applied to on-chain activity.
• Direct experience with non-custodial or self-custody product architectures and a clear understanding of compliance obligations.
• Fluency with blockchain analytics tooling and on-chain investigation.
• Policy mindset: ability to write, defend, and differentiate between rules, norms, and vendor defaults.
• Excellent written communication skills.
• Comfort as the first and only compliance hire, with ambition to build a function from scratch.

Qualifications

• Experience standing up a compliance program from zero at an early-stage company (nice to have).
• Exposure to money transmission, MSB registration, or state licensing frameworks (nice to have).
• Regulatory, enforcement, or policy experience (nice to have).
• Familiarity with card scheme rules and fiat payment rail compliance (nice to have).

Location and Work Environment

This role is primarily in-person at our Midtown, NYC headquarters. We work together Monday through Thursday for fast, iterative collaboration, with optional WFH Fridays to reset and recharge.
