About the role
The Head of Collection Management and Assessment Librarian oversees the library’s acquisitions and collection development processes and leads collection assessment initiatives. The position manages, monitors, and reports on all aspects of the library’s budget, ensuring effective and responsible allocation of resources. It also oversees interlibrary loan and resource sharing services in collaboration with the Metadata and Resource Management Librarian and supervises the Electronic Resources Librarian, Library Digital Technologies Administrator, and Library Assistant. The role contributes to library planning, policy development, assessment, and professional activities in support of the University’s academic mission.
Responsibilities
- Implement acquisitions policies and procedures in accordance with sound financial and professional standards.
- Develop priorities for departmental workflow and maintain the timely processing of orders and invoices.
- Supervise the Electronic Resources Librarian in the management of database and electronic resource subscriptions, including pricing negotiations and license reviews.
- Oversee interlibrary loan and resource sharing services jointly with the Metadata and Resource Management Librarian.
- Supervise the Digital Technology Administrator in the management of library systems configurations.
- Participate in the selection and training of departmental staff.
- Communicate effectively with staff concerning department workflow and library operations.
- Approve all expenditures for purchases up to authorized spending limits.
- Ensure efficient spending of allocated funds and provide budget reports to the Dean of the Library.
- Review Banner financial reports for accuracy and collaborate with the Dean of the Library and the Budget Office on problems associated with accounts or allocations.
- Communicate with librarians and faculty on publishing trends, available sources, and processing cycles.
- Coordinate with liaison librarians to ensure appropriate selection of library materials in support of the University’s curriculum.
- Evaluate gifts-in-kind and oversee the withdrawal of materials.
- Ensure a balanced collection and effective budget allocation process in consultation with liaison librarians.
- Participate as an ex officio member on the University’s Curriculum Committee to ensure the allocation of appropriate fiscal support for new academic programs.
- Assist in the discussion and formulation of library policies and procedures and in problem resolution.
- Assist in the development of the Library’s annual operating plan.
- Compile relevant statistics for outside surveys and departmental reviews.
- Cooperate with other librarians to provide service and assistance according to Library objectives.
- Monitor developments in librarianship and higher education through attendance at meetings and workshops, membership in professional associations, and reading of professional literature.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science
- 5–8 years of relevant experience
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
