About the role
The Head Coach is responsible for developing student-athletes in the sport of Sailing at the High School level (Varsity). Additional responsibilities include developing regular practice schedules, recruiting and mentoring assistant and lower-level coaches as needed, and collaborating with the Athletic Department to maintain a competitive and well-rounded program. This is a temporary, seasonal position that concludes at the end of the Sailing season. Coaches who are invited to return for a future season will be offered a new temporary appointment based on program needs and approval from the Athletic Director.
Responsibilities
- Develop student-athletes through safe and effective drills, skills, strategies, and lesson planning.
- Motivate and support student-athletes using positive reinforcement.
- Provide off-season training opportunities to improve individual and team performance.
- Track daily attendance and communicate with student-athletes and parents regarding absences.
- Maintain and secure all equipment; report any broken or unsafe items to the Athletic Department.
- Assist with issuing and returning team uniforms and equipment.
- Monitor academic performance to support student success.
- Communicate team equipment and supply needs to the Athletic Department.
- Clearly articulate the vision and scope of the Sailing program.
- Conduct a parent meeting prior to the start of the season.
- Share practice schedules and updates with athletes in a timely and organized manner.
- Respond positively and promptly to parent or athlete concerns.
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor for student-athletes.
- Demonstrate and promote good sportsmanship.
- Attend all required meetings and events scheduled by the Athletic Department.
- Be mindful of student-athletes’ social and emotional needs.
- Comply with all Mid-Pacific, ILH, IJF and HHSAA rules and regulations.
- Recruit, train, and oversee all coaches in the Sailing program, in collaboration with the Athletic Director.
- Supervise the practice and competition environments to maintain safety.
- Identify and address hazards or unsafe behaviors.
- Report injuries promptly to the Athletic Trainer.
- Follow the Mid-Pacific Athletics Emergency Action Plan during emergencies.
Qualifications
- Must hold or be willing to obtain valid CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
