Head Coach of Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track and Field

California Institute of Technology seeks a Head Coach for our Men's and Women's Cross Country / Track & Field programs. Located in Pasadena, California, Caltech is the world’s leading STEM research institute with 975 undergraduate students and 16 intercollegiate teams in NCAA Division 3. About the role

The head coach of Men's and Women's Cross Country / Track & Field is responsible for administering all aspects of the sport program including coaching, recruiting, game scheduling, student development, budget management, compliance with NCAA D3 and conference rules/regulations, and community building. The head coach will teach in the physical education curriculum and participate as a member of the college community in collaborative departmental functions.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate excellent teaching and coaching competencies in sport skill instruction, motivation, tactical strategies, and physical training and fitness in practices and contests.
• Design and execute a competitive schedule for intercollegiate contests that maximizes individual and collective student-athlete development and performance, prioritizing conference play within an academically rigorous educational experience.
• Create team results that are competitive within the SCIAC regular season on a consistent basis.
• Successfully recruit, matriculate, retain, and graduate student-athletes capable of attaining the baccalaureate degree in sufficient quantity to maintain a team roster appropriate for competitive success. Activities include identification and evaluation of prospects, communication strategy, record keeping, hosting campus visits, and traveling to market the Institute.
• Provide student-athletes with opportunities for social, emotional, and academic development through close interpersonal guidance, mentoring, and counseling.
• Supervise part-time assistant coaches and volunteer coaches.
• Manage a cost-effective and administratively efficient sport program within an annual operational budget, including purchasing, inventory, control of sports equipment and uniforms, management of team travel, and an effective national recruitment program.
• Participate in departmental and sport-specific marketing, public relations, civic and community outreach, and fundraising activities, including cultivation and stewardship of donors and alumni.
• Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with all constituents, including department colleagues, administration, faculty, and other college personnel.
• Demonstrate positive and effective communication in all aspects of the job, including writing, speaking, listening, and non-verbal skills.
• Teach a variety of beginner physical education classes, up to one per term, in Caltech’s required undergraduate physical education curriculum.
• Exhibit the highest professional standards and ethical behavior with regard to adherence to NCAA, Conference, Institute, and Department of Athletics rules, policies, and expectations.
• Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Athletics, Recreation, and Instruction, such as game or facility supervision duties, including facility care and maintenance.

Physical Demands

• Physically teaching, running, playing, instructing, and demonstrating.
• Lifting, carrying, and loading sport-specific equipment.
• Set up and tear down of sports contest support equipment.
• Some care and maintenance of sport-specific or general athletic facilities.
• Ability to safely lift, carry, and move at least 50 lbs. of equipment.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Valid Driver’s License and the ability to maintain it throughout the course of employment.
• Organized coaching experience.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, judgment, and integrity.
• Strong computing skills, including database manipulation, email and calendar management, technological teaching tools, video analysis, and manipulation.
• Ability to teach through physical instruction as well as images and emerging technologies.
• Passion and ability for personal growth and learning.
• Playing experience and passion for the sport.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a related field.
• Collegiate sports playing experience.
• Assistant or head collegiate coaching experience.

Pay

$77,000 - $81,000 per year. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
