Head Coach - Girls Basketball

Our coaches are actively engaged in the San Jose community and embrace the mission and values of KIPP Navigate. This seasonal, temporary role (12 hours per week) reports to the Athletic Director.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and direct the assigned girls basketball team.
• Instruct and demonstrate skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team development.
• Ensure that team rules and regulations regarding conduct and eligibility of the athletes are clearly communicated and followed.
• Plan, organize, advertise, and conduct tryouts for the basketball program; inform the Athletic Department and participants of final selections while maintaining the integrity of the selection process.
• Consult with the Athletic Director regarding off-season training programs, including scheduling dates for summer camps/practices, uniform fitting, and pre/post-tryout informational parent meetings.
• Create a safe environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
• Supervise athletes at all times during practices, transport to games, games, and until athletes have been picked up by guardians or make arrangements for public transportation.
• Model good sportsmanship behavior and maintain appropriate conduct toward opposing teams, fans, parents, officials, spectators, and the community.

Requirements

• 2 to 3 years of high school or club basketball coaching experience (required).
• High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
• Valid California Class C driver’s license and current insurance coverage.
• Safe driving record (DMV report will be requested).
• Ability to follow and uphold the policies and mission statement of KIPP Navigate.
• Familiarity with the rules and regulations of basketball.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with faculty, staff, administrators, students, parents, and community members.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively via email and phone.
• Access to reliable transportation.
• Ability to work independently and within a small team.
• Ability to coach athletes of different skill levels.

Training

• Complete required safety training for basic first aid and injury prevention through SafeSchools and NFHS Learn, including:
  • Annually: Mandated reporter, bloodborne pathogens, concussion in sports, sudden cardiac arrest, heat illness prevention (NFHS Learn).
  • Every two years: CPR and First Aid (CPR Certified).
  • At time of hire: Fundamentals of Coaching or certificate of completion from a previous sports season.

Physical, Mental, and Environmental Demands

• Physical: Ability to navigate office and school campuses and hold meetings in different spaces. Occasional lifting/carrying of equipment (1–20 lbs). Physical agility to move in various positions (kneeling, walking, pushing/pulling, squatting, twisting, turning, bending, stooping, and reaching overhead).
• Mental: Ability to handle stress of deadlines, analyze problems, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods, read, calculate, and perform routine math.
• Environmental: Gym or field environment with participants and spectators. Frequent travel (50%–70%) to gyms and fields throughout San Francisco and the Peninsula. Adherence to KIPP’s health and safety guidelines as outlined by the CDC, CDE, and public health agencies.

Pay

The hourly rate for this position is $20/hr.

Schedule

Seasonal, part-time role averaging 12 hours per week, based on a school calendar and time-off schedule.
