About the Role
The head coach reports directly to the athletic director and, with the athletic director’s approval, is responsible for all aspects of their sport.
Responsibilities
- Organizational and Administrative
- In cooperation with the Athletic Director, arrange an organizational meeting for candidates before the start of the season; distribute parent/physician certificates and insurance forms.
- Attend the physical examination for your sport; complete the eligibility sheet and return it with parent/physician certificates, insurance waiver forms, and Form A to the Athletic Director before the first practice.
- Issue equipment, maintain an accurate log of issued items, and ensure athletes care for equipment.
- Plan and organize practices and coordinate junior/senior programs; assign duties to assistants, including junior high coaches.
- Administer pre-game details for home and away games.
- Familiarize yourself and your athletes with P.I.A.A. and league rules regarding amateur status, eligibility, and athlete responsibilities.
- Inform your team of and enforce P.I.A.A. and school regulations regarding scholastic and attendance requirements for athletic participation.
- Select and instruct student managers in their responsibilities and conduct.
- Supervise and maintain discipline in locker rooms, during travel, and at games.
- Attend all practices and games; ensure the facility is secured (lights off, showers off, doors locked) after each session.
- At the end of the season, collect all equipment and uniforms, ensure they are cleaned, and store them properly.
- Submit the following to the Athletic Director within two weeks of the season’s end:
- Inventory report noting equipment needing repair, items to be discarded, and any unreturned equipment with athlete names.
- Report of players including: numbers starting and ending the season, letter winners, and award recipients.
- Compile a season record (e.g., win-loss, top scorers, school records) and submit it to the Athletic Director within one month of the season’s end.
- Requisition equipment and supplies for your sport.
- Recommend retention or replacement of staff to the Athletic Director and principal.
- Attend award ceremonies to present letters and trophies.
- Ensure the security of valuables.
- Coaching Methods and Techniques
- Treat all players fairly and without prejudice.
- Instruct the team in fundamental skills, advancing to the highest technical level possible.
- Use modern conditioning methods to optimize physical condition and reduce injury risk.
- Understand the physical, social, mental, and psychological makeup of your players and how it affects their performance.
- Work closely with the athletic trainer on treatment and rehabilitation of injured athletes.
- Personal Characteristics and Training
- Enjoy working with young people and possess a fundamental knowledge of the sport.
- Set a positive example for assistants and the team.
- Teach athletes to win through fair play.
- Maintain composure at practices and games; expect the same from athletes.
- Continuously study and improve your coaching competency.
- Prioritize the school over any single sport.
- Maintain ethical relationships with players, assistants, other coaches, administrators, the public, and the press.
- Support and promote other sports teams; avoid soliciting players from other sports.
- Public Relations
- Attend booster club meetings as able.
- Foster wholesome public relations within the school, community, and with other schools.
- Interpret your program to the community as part of the broader educational program.
- Treat officials respectfully, even in disagreement.
- Treat opponents as guests at home contests.
- Model appropriate behavior at games; the team and fans will follow your example.
- Maintain friendly relations with the news media.
