HDD Operator/Locator - CDL Preferred

About the role

The CDL Directional Drill Operator/Locator (HDD) operates equipment necessary to install fiber-optic cable, copper cable, coaxial cable, single and three-phase power cable, and possibly sewer or water facilities safely and efficiently via the HDD trenchless construction method in rural and urban areas. You will read prints and schematics, train and mentor team members, and work outdoors in all weather conditions.

This is a 100% field position requiring travel and extended periods away from home. Physical demands include walking, sitting, standing, bending, twisting, stooping, pushing, pulling, carrying, lifting, and coordinating eyes, hands, feet, and limbs for skilled movement.

Responsibilities

• Operate Directional Bore equipment for installation of underground cable conduit or utilities.
• Ensure proper steering based on job preparations and projections.
• Operate construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade alignment specifications.
• Maintain bore profile plots and provide customers with directional drilling data.
• Abide by all company, manufacturer, and industry safety procedures, including attending mandatory safety meetings.
• Inspect and maintain all equipment, including routine maintenance such as greasing, oiling, and making minor repairs.
• Read utility locates and coordinate daylighting of facilities.
• Assist with all aspects of the job, including basic labor responsibilities.
• Ensure proper setup and cleanup of work sites, including traffic and pedestrian control measures.

Requirements

• Valid Class A CDL.
• Ability to pass pre-employment screenings.
• Demonstrated field experience working with HDD crews—operating rigs and/or locating.
• Experience with Horizontal Directional Drilling around utilities in rural and urban areas.
• Experience with different size Vermeer or Ditch Witch units and various brands of locating equipment (preferred).
• General knowledge of utility construction procedures, including print reading.
• Knowledge of procedures, tools, and equipment for safe and effective underground utility installation.
• Comprehension of ground conditions for drilling/boring.
• Ability to work in a team environment and maintain equipment and hand tools.
• Ability to read, comprehend, and carry out instructions.
• Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
• Willingness to learn.
