HAZARDOUS WASTE TECH I
Job Overview
Under the direction of an Environmental Services Supervisor, the Hazardous Waste Technician is responsible for removing all waste streams (trash, biohazardous and chemotherapy waste, soiled linen, recycling, etc.) from the facility to specific collection areas. This position performs a variety of duties that support the department in maintaining a clean environment for patients and staff.
Essential Functions
- Safely remove and transport infectious/non-infectious waste including medical, hazardous, municipal, recycling, and linen from the facility to specified collection areas
- Follow an appropriate schedule to ensure timeliness of waste and soiled linen removal throughout the facility
- Maintain cleanliness of the loading dock, trash compactor area, and trash containers
- Move furniture and other items from patient care hallways to maintain proper egress
- Setup and breakdown of tables and chairs for meetings and events
- Complete working knowledge of communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens, isolation standards and transmission-based precautions, chain of infection, hand hygiene to ensure patient safety
- Properly clean and disinfect all types of areas including clinical inpatient/outpatient (patient rooms, exam rooms, nurse stations, etc.), support/common areas, offices, labs, conference rooms, elevators, stairwells, corridors, external grounds, etc.)
- Handle and dispose of medical waste and sharps observing all required precautions, including properly tying and labeling bags
- Clean spills containing blood or other potentially infectious material using established infection control, safety, and ES departmental procedures
- Safely uses, dilutes, and stores chemicals and cleaning materials
- Maintain positive relationships and good communication with patients, visitors, staff members, and those within the Environmental Services department
- Report all facilities/maintenance issues to Supervisor
- Effectively communicates with staff within and outside of Environmental Services department
Minimum Qualifications
- Six months experience in the following: healthcare, Environmental Services, customer service, or hospitality
- Ability to follow basic oral/written instructions in English (for the safety of our patients and staff in an emergency situation)
- Completion of a healthcare environmental services training from MacDonald Training Center may also be considered in lieu of the six (6) months of experience
