Hazardous Waste & Environmental Specialist

About the Role

This role provides overarching Hazardous Waste and Environmental Safety expertise to a national aerospace manufacturer, one of Apex’s most valued clients. Over the last two decades, Apex has partnered with this client to achieve their occupational health and safety, ergonomic, environmental, and engineering goals. The incumbent will serve as a Hazardous Waste and Environmental Specialist supporting site-wide hazardous waste and environmental compliance operations.

This is a 6-month on-site position located in Auburn, Washington, with possible extension based on performance and client need. The role is dedicated full-time to supporting the site’s hazardous waste and environmental compliance operations. The individual will work closely with environmental, engineering, maintenance, leadership, and EHS stakeholders to assist with closing hazardous waste and compliance gaps while supporting day-to-day operations.

Responsibilities

• Apply hazardous waste background, including familiarity with Washington Dangerous Waste regulations.
• Manage related records (manifests, hazardous waste invoices, MSDS, etc.).
• Conduct environmental compliance activities, including walking inspections of RCRA accumulation/satellite areas.
• Document and photograph areas of concern, then develop professional emails to convey desired mitigation.
• Perform follow-up inspections to ensure corrective measures were implemented.
• Support the Factory Dust Disposal Project and Sampling Tracking (locations & disposal requests).
• Conduct Site Inspections for Small Quantity Generators and review/update Land Disposal Restrictions.
• Compile and organize RCRA Inspection Forms and review/approve invoices.
• Update Battery Collection Locations with HazMat and support Hazmat ECTs.
• Assist in developing a mini training program on regulatory compliance and site policies, including visiting crew meetings to train individuals or small groups.
• Provide small presentations on policies, program aspects, and compliance (desirable but not required).
• Demonstrate reasonable computer skills (data entry, email, and ability to learn the client’s internal database and programs).
• Work as part of a team with the client’s current Environmental employees dedicated to hazardous waste compliance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, waste management, chemical science, or a related technical discipline.
• Minimum of 1+ years of progressive experience in hazardous waste and/or waste management, engineering, or environmental/hazardous waste compliance (education and experience will be considered together).
• 40-hour HAZWOPER certification (desired but not required).
• OSHA 30 Certified, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Professional in Waste Management (CPWM), or Hazardous Waste Management Specialist (HMS) (desired but not required).
• Excellent communication, training, technical writing, and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and standard safety documentation and reporting practices.
• Valid driver’s license.

Pay

Annual expected pay range: $85,000 USD – $110,000 USD.
