Haul Truck Driver

Department: Hauling • Reports to: Processing Supervisor / Plant Manager • Hours: 7 AM – 3 PM

About the role

The Haul Truck Driver operates a variety of heavy equipment—including tractor, scraper, dozers, excavators, front-end loader, 40-ton haul truck, grader, and backhoes—at the mine. This position ensures clay is transported from the mine to the plant safely, in compliance with all Department of Transportation rules and regulations, and requires a current valid Class A license with a manual endorsement.

Responsibilities

• Mine raw material at the pit using heavy equipment in a safe manner.
• Ensure proper quality of clay mined.
• Record quantity of material mined and hours of equipment operation.
• Haul ore from pit to plant and transport waste back to the pit.
• Maintain dust pit area for haul trucks to dump waste.
• Maintain roads and berms to ensure adequate height and clear obstructions.
• Use hand tools to make minor equipment adjustments.
• Keep work areas clean and free of clutter.
• Obey all Company, State, and Federal safety policies, rules, and regulations.
• Report abnormal conditions, defects, or changes in machines, procedures, or job conditions to appropriate personnel.
• Complete Pre-Shift and workplace examination checklists; report repair needs.
• File daily Workplace Examinations and inspection forms properly.
• Work independently with limited supervision.
• Operate water truck/sprinklers for dust control as needed.
• Read mining maps as necessary.
• Act in accordance with WE CARE values and participate in improvement activities.
• Maintain mine security by preventing trespassing and ensuring contractors adhere to MSHA and Oil-Dri safety rules.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support company goals, processes, and procedures.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• 2–3 years of driving and heavy equipment operation experience.
• Clean DMV record (must provide print-out).
• Class A Driver’s license with a manual endorsement.
• Basic mechanical knowledge and familiarity with hand tools.
• Ability to work safely and pass the Essential Job Function Exam during the employment offer period.
• Meet assessment requirements and pass pre-employment tests (WPT, Quantitative, Verbal, BMCT).
• Ability to read, comprehend, and act on product specifications, SOPs, PWIs, AIQ processes, and similar documents.
• Receive and pass training to operate mine equipment (dozers, scrapers, excavators, water truck, haul truck, front-end loader, tractor grader).
• Maintenance background helpful for collaborating with Plant Maintenance personnel.
• Demonstrated ability to perform detail-oriented work.
• Basic math skills and good communication skills.
• Ability to read and write in English.
• Physical ability to safely operate trucks and heavy equipment.
• Endurance to withstand heavy physical labor and work on uneven, rocky, or sloped terrain.
• Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and inclines while carrying tools.
• Frequently carry/lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to hear radio communications.
• Ability to function in the role while wearing required PPE (safety glasses, hearing protection, dust mask, protective coveralls, etc.) in hot/cold, dusty, or loud industrial environments.

Pay

Pay rate: $30+ per hour (varying wage range).
