Hardware Systems Safety Engineer

About the role

The Hardware Systems Safety Engineer performs comprehensive hazard and safety analyses for aerospace hardware and flight systems, ensuring that all safety requirements are clearly defined, tracked, and verified. This role collaborates closely with verification and validation teams to maintain robust system‑level control strategies, including fault detection, isolation, and recovery, and supports the articulation of system hazards and mitigation controls to key stakeholders such as NASA.

Responsibilities

• Perform detailed hazard analysis for aerospace hardware systems and flight systems to identify potential safety risks and failure modes.
• Conduct safety analysis to evaluate the impact of hardware and system failures and define appropriate mitigation strategies.
• Track safety requirements and hazards using systems software and maintain accurate, up‑to‑date documentation.
• Interact and collaborate with verification and validation (V&V) teams to ensure safety requirements are properly implemented and verified across all systems.
• Assist with the definition and maintenance of system‑level control strategies, including Fault Detection, Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) strategies and hazard mitigation approaches.
• Perform anomaly and nonconformance analysis, including tracking issues, driving resolutions, and verifying corrective actions.
• Analyze flight systems to identify hazards related to safety systems, electrical systems, and hardware integration.
• Articulate identified hazards and associated controls to stakeholders such as NASA, clearly explaining required electronics and control measures in the event of system failures.
• Support system integration activities from a safety perspective, ensuring that hardware and safety systems function correctly within aerospace environments.
• Prepare and maintain hazard reports and safety documentation for hardware systems in safety‑critical environments.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience performing hazard analysis and safety analysis for aerospace hardware systems and flight systems.
• Experience creating detailed hazard reports for hardware systems in safety‑critical environments.
• Hands‑on experience with systems safety assessments, including identification of hazards and definition of mitigation strategies.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience working with safety in a safety‑critical environment, preferably involving aerospace systems.
• Strong experience in safety systems, hazard analysis, and hardware integration for aerospace applications.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Knowledge of flight systems and aerospace safety requirements.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with verification and validation (V&V) teams and other engineering stakeholders.
• Strong communication skills to clearly articulate hazards, controls, and safety requirements to technical and non‑technical audiences.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with system integration activities in aerospace or other safety‑critical industries.
• Familiarity with Fault Detection, Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) strategies for complex systems.
• Understanding of safety systems architecture and control strategies for hardware and electronics.
• Ability to use systems software tools to track requirements, hazards, and safety‑related documentation.
• Experience in electrical and aerospace systems, including safety‑critical hardware and control electronics.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills for anomaly and nonconformance analysis.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $55.00 – $75.00 per hour. Individual compensation within this range will depend on qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job‑related factors.

Location

This is a contract‑to‑hire position based out of Webster, TX. The role is fully onsite.
